Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

I related a lot to what Tendonshurt said but wanted to expand without hogging her thread. I liked what Tigg2 said about how you can hurt lying around or you can hurt doing something, and I have pushed myself to do something. My problem comes from more the socializing aspect. We have moved twice, once right as I was getting sick and then when we moved here when my disease was progressing rapidly. So I do not know anyone who knew me when I was well. That's nice as far as expectations go but it is really hard to make new friends with all the baggage I bring. Plus I am almost 40, we have no kids so there is no common ground in that aspect. In addition, I haven't worked in about 10 years. I have been on disablity since 04. For some reason people either think I never worked or just don't want to ask. But I find I have nothing in common with most normals and it is torture trying to find some common ground. Add that to I am a natural introvert, an only child from a very small family. When I was well, I was very social, and looked forward to spending time with people. Now it is pure torture. In addition of nothing to talk about, I will also get the, oh my cousin was sick and tried this new pill, supplement, diet, etc.And if you would just try them you might feel better. I am so sick of having to defend myself. Not only do those "Cures" do nothing for us, with our prescription meds, they could either hurt or kill us. One of my husbands friends hounded us for months to try this powder. Everyone they knew was now off all their meds, was feeling a 100% better, was back to doing things they hadn't done in a very long time. Well I finally got so sick that they were not getting our backoff clue of silence, I looked into it. It was nothing more than glucosamine and chondrotin. Now I know this has helped many as a joint supplement, but it has shellfish in it and I am deathly allergic to shell fish. So if I would have blindly taken it, I would have had a severe allergic reaction. So these supplements are not harmless and you must know what you are putting in your body. Hey, maybe I need to get the Letter to Normals on a t-shirt and wear it to social events.LOL
I am dreading the holidays coming up, my husband's business requires a great deal of socializing and it only quadruples over the holiday season. He is a very social person and if it was up to him we would be out every Friday and Saturday. It is just overwhelming. I am the type that would rather stay home cuddled up with my dogs and a good book. And we do, he goes to a lot of these things on his own, but ultimately it is not good for him to be at too many social events without his wife. We have already run into some issues. The last thing I want to do at the end of the day when I am at my worst, is do my hair and make-up, put on heels and go and try and pretend that I am interested in all their new toys and exotic trips while my pain is an 8 and I am trying not to show it on my face. We've been invited to a Halloween party, costume required and I so do not want to go. By the time I am ready, we drive over 40 minutes to get there, I will be ready to go and I feel guilty about making my husband take me home because he would like to stay and socilaize with everyone. I cannot blame him because if I was well, albeit I wouldn't be jumping for joy about going, but I would be much more able to endure it so my husband could enjoy himself.
Here is my experience with any party or gathering. We get to the host's house. The men make a beeline to where all the other men are and the women are in the kitchen, messing around with the food. If kids are involved their attention is split between kids and the prep of food. I have already used a lot of my energy to get ready and get there so if I need to go sit down, I have just isolated myself. People might come over and ask how I am but I have nothing to say as I DO NOT want to be one who only talks about my health, But with no kids, they definitely don't want to hear a lot about my dogs! So if they stay, I end up hearing all about their jobs, kids, family, vacations, etc. and I have not been asked one question about me or my life beyond how do I feel which is usually prefaced with:' Well you look like you are feeling better!" DO not even let me get started, just refer to Letters To Normals!! SO after they leave, my feelings are hurt because I was not asked a single thing about my life. Yet I listened to them go over everything in their lives since the big bang!!
I am stuck sitting there feeling isolated and alone. I can try and help but most often these people are friends and have done many get togethers and as I have to cancel ones where I am sick, I don't have the relationships that they have been able to build. So I end up feeling more in the way than someone whose and shortly I will need to sit down again and so it repeats. I would rather have a root canal, seriously!
Another example was when I tried to get involved in a Bible study. Of course afterwards they would all go for coffee, but most times getting to the study and being there for an hour or 2 was hard enough and I had no energy left for going somewhere else for coffee. So I don't have the time invested in bonding with the other women. My husband and I both went to the pastor and told him our situation and asked if any of the ladies would be willing to come to MY house for coffee. He told me he would ask a few and have them call, and no one did. This was our second attempt at a church that left us hurt and disillusioned. The first is a very long story ending up with me cleaning a members house(she was sicker than I was) while her son and husband layed on the couch and watched.Literally had to ask them to lift their legs up so I could vacuum under them.
So I have made an effort to make friends and socialize. If it was up to me, I would not do it. Now I am considered a very friendly person and if a neighbor needs something and I can do it, I will in a heartbeat. If I can't my husband usually can. It's just in small talk socializing I do so badly in and hate with a passion.
I know there is no easy answer, my husband and I are in therapy trying to come up with a compromise that works for us both. As of yet we are still struggling with me not wanting to go at all, and him wanting to go to everything LOL!!! No seriously, I know it is a negotiation. But at times I get frustrated having to remind the therapist that ours is not a normal situation. I was reading a blog and the person referred to he and his spouse being a threesome with the chronic illness being the third. So very true.
Well sorry for writing a book, just really venting and obviosuly I needed to vent !! LOL You would think it would get easier the longer we do this, NOT!

I have learned how to spend less time on make up and schedule a blow out for special parties. They are limited. A holiday gathering with the company my husband retired from and possibly one other social gathering in a year.He does the company picnic by himself. He goes to a men's Bible Study.I try to make it to church with him but it rarely happens. He understands.
I never discuss my pain with anyone. Only on this board. My oldest son asks every day. He calls on his drive home from work. I have four grandchildren. Two are in school and when I make a school event they are happy and I am happy. I am not always able and when I do I pay for it. It is worth it though. As long as I can walk I will try to make school events.
You are 40 and I don't know what to tell you. I believe that your husband should accept a comprise. I also would he hope he would agree to get you out as soon as possible from the events you are able to attend.
Does any of his associates know of your illness? 40 is young and life does not always deal fair hands.
Have you met your neighbors? I suppose they all work or stay at home moms. One thing I was able to do when I could drive was do lunch with a couple of women who could not drive. It was such a blessing to them and me. Both older but I learned so much and we became fast friends.
I don't think you should be a doormat as in cleaning someone's home while the men sit around. Able bodied men. Perhaps there is a women who is in your church that is unable to drive and you could help out once in awhile. Also there will be a list at your church of members who are in care centers. I visited several from our church. They didn't have a clue who I was they were far into dementia but both remembered their husbands and I would just let them talk. I took them a treat each time.
I am introvert as well. The above activities I mentioned are non-threatening and allow you to share some of your self with someone who needs a little boost. No superficial conversation. You just being you.
Just thoughts. You are great and I am sorry for your circumstances.
I am 60 and it is a bit easier for me. Most people don't expect as much from 60.
Boxer I just wanted to say I understand. If you ever need to vent or just talk holler at me. I'm here alot.
Healing hugs
It is rude and puts me on the spot.
I wish I had answers.
I think you can not change your personality especially if you really dont want to. Do what you want and if you want to go to the party dont give a hoot what other people think and dont put so much pressure on yourself I think when you stop doing that and you are more at ease you will find it easier to open up and make small chit chat.
You know what is weird is I am more social with people I dont know then people I do know like my extended family cousins and such those are the people I struggle with maybe because I sort of care what they think but with people you have no relation to is just easier I guess for me that is anyways.
I think talking to people other then hubby is important and I was thinking about it the other day and I always wanted to play Bingo sounds funny but I think I Might go. I also want to volunteer at a animal rescue. Maybe meeting people doing things that you like to do might help with being able to build conversations if you have something to talk about.
The real problem for me is this:
I know how much energy it takes to walk to the kitchen and make a meal. I know how much energy it takes to get to the bathroom. I know how much it takes to go up to bed.
All this when I am at home.
We recently went on vacation. We were at one place and I was getting sick. It took all my energy to get thru the talk we were at. Then I needed to dig deeper and walk back to hotel, wait for elevator, walk down long hall to hotel room, and struggle with things outta place in bath. By the time dinner came I was too sick to eat.
This went on for 5 days before I said, "just leave me in room to die!!!" melodrama I know but that was the first day I could actually eat dinner.
When we go out we have to use up more energy and stamina to do things that we can easily do at home. Sometimes it takes all I have just to sit up at the table in a resturant. By the time food comes, I feel tooo sick to eat.
I like being able to eat.
Unfortunately most of my neighbors work. Before my husband got transferred, we were in a perfect neighborhood as it had a mix of people, moms who stayed home, retirees, etc. But with two moves we are in an area where both parents work.
Although I have to say being an introvert is a blessing, I would have gone crazy if I was an extrovert. I really enjoy being home with my dogs.
Thanks Tendon, it sounds like he wont give up! I bet he will call again!
Sunny, I know and I do not like being put on the spot! Thats why I now say well trying some of that could kill me so no thanks!! And about your vacation, so true. The other thing I discovered on vacation this year(my family has a cottage in PA and I was able to go up for 2 months. My husband flew up for a few weeks and some long weekends) is when I had friends or family it was SO much harder. I realized that my husband and I have kind of have this dance worked out. He saves me steps and other things that other people, no matter how helpful they are dont. So doing the exact same thing with them vs my husband was so much harder!
Cale LOL! Me too!
Manny, yes I do better with people I dont know or when I was in a professional capacity. I had no problem then. I also think it was because I had more to talk about or at least what others like to talk about meaning job, activities, etc. I really feel since I no longer work, I no longer matter. And I mean thats how it feels in that moment. I do not feel that way about myself!! We volunteer with Boxer Rescue, but I cant right now or I would bring home every dog!!
DEBALA, yep me too!
The stimulation is often too much for my body even if it's enjoyable.
The best is lunch or coffee with one good friend. That is something I really like.
As for the social events, I choose with care. Only if there will be a least 5 or more people I really really like. I guess I'm lucky not to have a partner in that respect, since I get to choose each time.... but then, I have to drive myself and that's an extra effort. So you win, you lose.
All this to say that I sympathize with you about having to socialize when you don't want to... no fun.
Hugs,
Ama
I still like being home although I miss my job horribly. I feel a tremendous amount of guilt about not socializing with my husband. He has asked me at least 10 times tonight if I was going to try and go to the Halloween party tomorrow night. I would like to go, but I do not know anyone except for 2 of the guys my husband knows. I do not know their wives or anyone else. I like your rule about knowing 5 or more people, I may borrow that if you don't mind!
We had our counseling session tonight and socializing came up and I said I would rather have a root canal then socialize with people don't know LOL!
