I'm not sure if this is related to my meds or not but here goes: A few times a year I need to use an anti-nausea drug called Phenergan for kidney stones, sinusitis, nausea from viruses, etc. It is an antihistamine and works well. But I'm wondering if there's a side effect I don't know about. I took it Weds and woke Thursday with my right eye all swollen, tearing and crusty. Looks like pink eye but isn't. My sinuses on that side are out of control, with pain, pressure, ear pain, & bad headaches.
Today I wake with same problem and a few hours later am back in bed with nausea, heightened sense of smell, eye swollen, eye pounding, eye pain that feels like there's sand under my eyelid (I even checked!) and constant tearing in the one eye. Even my teeth on that side hurt. It FEELS like a sinus infection but for the eye, which looks disgusting. It just swelled shut while watching tv with my 3 year old. DH says it looks awful. Well, yeah!
This is a chicken and the egg question bc the main reason I take the phenergan is for nausea related to my sinusitis. But when I DO take it, it seems like my eye gets involved. It sure works for the nausea, which I get with sinus infections & headaches, so I can't complain. It also should be noted that phenergan works like a sleeping pill for me- I won't even take it if my hubby's not here to watch my son b/c I inevitably fall asleep after taking it.
I was lucky to discover this drug as I'm allergic to compazine & some others related to compazine. I don't take it often, but I'd be lost w/o it. I just wonder if the sinusitis is causing the eye problems and therefore the phenergan is innocent, or if taking the phenergan makes the sinuses worse & therefore causes my eye to swell, tear, hurt & burn?
Anyone else take this? I just took another one b/c of the nausea (hate vomiting more than a bad eye) and will likely fall asleep. If I wake with a bad eye another day in a row, is it from the med or the underlying cause?
In addition, when I take it, I seem to sleep LONGER than normal. Okay on weekends like this. I tend to sleep sounder, and move less. So I sleep more on one side than the other. If I sleep on my left side, this happens to my left eye. Am I sleeping too long so the sinus crap goes to my eye?
I swear, I'm SO confused. Such a great medication- I'd hate to have to stop taking it, but it DOES seem somehow connected to this eye problem. I have large sinus cavities (my dentist said they're larger than any woman's he's ever seen and most men's! I'm not a big woman and have a history and family full of sinus troubles.
Obviously I will see a doctor about this, but meanwhile, I'm curious if anyone gets sinus trouble in their eyes, too, and also if anyone takes or took pheneran and had a similar reaction. I can't blame the drug when I'm taking it to stop nausea & sinusitis, but the eye thing is throwing me.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
I want to say this sounds more like a bad sinus infection that is affecting your eye as well.
But it could be an allergic reaction. Was the phenergan you took Wed different than the ones you've used before? Is it a new script or a different generic version of phenergan?
Just to be on the safe side, I'd take 50-100mg of benedryl, if you're able to take it. If that helps significantly, then maybe it is an allergic reaction to something in the pill/capsule, not necessarily to phenergan itself.
Also, apply warm moist compresses to your eye, 20 min on, 20 min off. You can wet a washcloth and put it in the microwave- just be careful- it may get really hot. This will help with the swelling, no matter what the cause.
If the symptoms get worse, or continue past Monday, I'd get in to see you physician. You may or may not need to take antibiotics for this. No way to tell without looking at you.

Since it is only in one eye it sounds more like pink-eye than allergies. Allergies would affect both eyes....wouldn't they?
The odd part, is that if I sleep on my right side, it seems that my sinuses on my right and my eye get the big hit. If I sleep on my left, I get it only on the left! It's so weird.
I do have chronic sinusitis so I wonder if those large sinuses I spoke of just allow too much nasal drippings (not sure what to call it) get caught in the nooks and crannies. Then I wake up and it's all shifted to one side of my face.
As mentioned it's totally possible, but as it goes away for days and then returns, or goes away for weeks or even months at times, I think it's a sinus problem. But I'm not ruling out anything. If you'd seen me when I woke today you'd say "pinkeye!" Seeing me now, you'd likely say, "Your eyes a bit red."
Again- a VERY strange symptom and I should get it looked at before insurance changes in January. Thanks everyone for your ideas and posts. Keep them coming- I'm still hoping to hear someone might know what it is! ;)
