Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

Okay, so I'm going to say this exactly how it happened and let you draw your own conclusions b/c I don't know WHAT to think.
B/c I have RSD in my left foot (15 years this month) I have allowed other areas of my body, other injuries, to "go". The painkillers partially cover my back problems as WELL as my RSD, so I figured I would just look like a whiny baby by going in for the back troubles. But when I'm working, when I'm away from home every month, I go get a massage at whatever resort I'm covering.
I'm in Cancun, Mexico and have been here a million times, give or take. At least 30, possibly 40 times. I'm at a top notch resort. I went to get a massage today. The massage therapist was amazingly good at her job, speaking perfect English, knowing what RSD is (THAT alone made me happy!) and had studied for years to become not only a massage therapist but has 1 year left on her studies to become a physical therapist. She went to a 4 year college with emphasis on anatomy and science, and THEN decided to become a massage therapist with this well-known hotel chain. She's going to be working in a hospital soon, when she gets her PT license. I was told by 3 separate people how lucky I was to get her.
I began by telling her what I always say "Don't touch my left foot." She said okay, but was VERY interested in why. I started to talk about RSD w/o saying the name and she said, "You mean you have CRPS!" (That's what they call RSD now.) I was stunned. She said, "I wondered why you limped."
Okay, point of fact, SOMETIMES I limp. Not usually when in a warm climate like this, but I've been having troubles with my foot and back of late and I guess I was. One point to the massage therapist. Not that I LIKE being caught limping. And I STILL say I wasn't. (Can you tell I'm a bit vain on the subject?)
She asked me if I'd had PT and talked about the sympathetic nervous system- really impressing me. Then the massage began. I'd paid extra for the massage that is easy on the body EXCEPT for the specific areas I need stronger hands on. She gave me a massage that was unlike ANY I've ever had. I mean, I've had massages in so many counties, including this very city, and nothing like this. She put her whole body into it and it hurt at points but she had me breathe in and out and she released some big knots. But it was the LITTLE knots I wanted help with. I have terrible rhomboid muscles b/c I hunch forward, due to big chest, writing, etc.
She used every muscle in HER body to give me a strong massage but didn't really hit the little knots near my scapula that I literally sigh in relief for. But all in all, it was a good massage, just done differently. I'd rather have 50 minutes of literally digging out every knot of muscles on each side of my scapula, but that is quite rare. And she did a good job.
As we left she wanted to talk. She suggested I come back tomorrow or later tonight b/c a 50 minute massage just isn't enough for a back and body like mine.
She said "I don't know how to say this to you but your back is so swollen!" OKAYYYY. What? Can a back BE swollen? She said, "You have huge knots that need to be worked on." I said I didn't know, that this was really an expensive thing and it was a treat to myself and I can't really afford another massage.
Okay, this is where I want opinions. She said, "I just worry. I know you get regular massages. But your back worries me. You need....you need medication! Now I am NOT going to get you into anything like that, it's illegal and I don't want to get you into that...but you need something! You can't walk around like that!"
"I'll let you know." I interrupted as I was getting nervous.
"You need to see a doctor about your back. I'm not trying to frighten you- but you shouldn't have to deal with that. Isn't it painful? Those muscles are in huge knots! There's a medicine... but you don't want to get involved..."
"I can handle it." I thanked her and went about my way.
So here's where I WANTED to say: "Look, I have meds."
But what if she were connected to someone who could get into my room? I don't know that I think that, but I held my tongue. I wanted to relieve her worry, but telling her I had valium for muscle spasms could get me into trouble if anyone wanted to steal.
She asked me if I was willing to lay in the sauna. I am extremely claustraphobic and hate heat. But she was SO worried. She said, I'll make a bed of towels and just a few minutes?"
So I went into the sauna. I stayed 10 minutes laying directly on the hot bench with a thin towel between. She was happy about that. She asked if I had a heating pad. She asked if I would book another session. I said I'd let her know, yet again.
I do NOT think she was after money. But I've learned that anything is possible and the mention of illegal activity and drugs scared the crap out of me, pardon my French. I know for a FACT that people do bribe pharmacists, etc., and maybe a massage therapist WOULD refer me to an unscrupulous pharmacist- not for money but to help someone in pain?
But she had said, "But I don't want to get you into that." It was all hush-hush as we spoke and she's very healthy and educated and not a drug pusher. I think she saw my back as one of the worst she'd seen and was trying to help me.
I showered and dressed so fast and ran out w/o make-up on. She was trying to help me, and I KNOW my back is worse than I admit. It's like having 2 kids but one needs ALL your attention so you don't WANT to ignore the 2nd or leave that child alone more, but child #1 is literally screaming for you. That is my foot and my back. Make any sense?
I have a 2 year old who likes to cuddle and recently started wanting Mommy to carry him down the stairs in the mornings. I like the cuddling and it's down, not up. But it's harming my back, I guess. I know. And when I'm getting massages I'm always just a day from getting off 2 planes where I carried my laptop and more on my shoulder. It causes major knots.
But now my legs are muscle spasming OUT- like it is a muscle spasm party, and my left eye is twitching like crazy. WTH is THAT about? This past week has been a game of what can go wrong with my body THIS hour!
So- while we'll never know the truth 100%- does anyone think she was trying to get me to buy meds? Or just to take better care of myself? She DID tell me to see a doc as soon as I got home b/c of the "swollen" back. And that is where I go to - did she mean to use a different word? How can a back "swell"?
I'm beat. This happened 1st thing this morning and I had a long day. It's only 6pm here and it's the Mayan Solstice. I'm forgetting the big dinner in lieu of an early bedtime. Tomorrow's my last full day here and I want to have it to myself. I want to parasail and get my hair done crazy and do some shopping. I want to lay in the sun, but this time by the sea, and watch all the vendors come by.
Anyway, long day ahead. Did I overreact? When someone mentions meds it makes me overreact. Ugh, I hope I didn't embarrass myself. I relayed our conversations almost exactly as it happened- I wrote it right after it happened. I didn't want to forget anything big. But there was an earthquake in Mexico earlier and while I'm thanking God it wasn't here, it did somehow hurt the internet services, or so we're told. The scary part was Acapulco was our 2nd choice for the meeting. If we hadn't found a great deal here...
The other thing is- how BAD could my back BE to alarm a woman like that? I had a massage in Vegas last month and that therapist DID mention that my back was a mess and agreed that a breast reduction would help a LOT, but she never mentioned swelling and "tons of large knots". Well, she said I had a LOT of knots but don't we all? WTH IS a muscle knot, anyway? I STILL don't understand it. So yes, other therapists (most of them) have commented on my rhomboid muscles and how bad my posture is and how I would benefit from more massage or chiropractic work or PT or an operation- the list is endless. But no one ever SCARED me before.
I have my pain doc tuesday next week and my insurance exam on Monday! This isn't the kind of thing you "mention" to a doc doing an insurance exam, is it?
Okay, so did I overreact? It's okay to say yes. Just that mention of meds....I'll go put my feet up now and pray that my OWN meds take the pain away. Meanwhile, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Xoxo.
As far as a back being swollen, it can be from inflammation. My chiro can tell when my sacroiliac joint is inflames because my lower back is swollen.
If you are feeling uncomfortable, there is genreally a reason. I would never tell anyone that I even have anything beyond tylenol.
If you want the doctors opinion, I'd mention that my back seems to hurt a little more and would he give it the "once over" to be sure that you are not blowing off something serious just in case.
My doc would react to that by checking me out and telling me what is what.
And years ago one a former trip after injuring my back parasailing, (OMG, that was our honeymoon in 2000!) we had gone to get Motrin and been offered Percocet and valium in these long strips. It happened twice to Mike and I- both times after asking for motrin. Maybe back then it was a key word? I don't know. But I'd NEVER buy illegal drugs. I think she got that, too, b/c she backed off and was recommending heat and more massage...but again, I just don't know. Twice at LEAST on trips in Mexico I have been offered stronger prescription meds and both times I said no. And my hubby was offered Viagra! That was way back in 2000- OMG I forgot about all that, LOL!
I've heard that Canun is now NOT the place for this kind of thing and it is another reason I feel safe here. But...what WAS she offering? I was afraid to even ask just to find out what it was b/c I kept thinking this is a trap and you wouldn't buy anything anyway. As someone wrote above, pot, maybe? I don't smoke and would never do it, but maybe she thought for pain control?
It's such an enigma b/c she was seriously worried about my pain. She had pounded my poor body and knew there was more to be done. And she couldn't figure out how I lived with the pain!
It's all quite mysterious and if she was trying to help, I don't agree with the methods (IF that was it) but agree with her empathy. And if I had NOT had medication and felt this bad, would I have said NO to a pharmacist? I did in the past and sure hope I would. Still, pain can crack almost anyone. AWWW, who am I kidding? I can't even bring myself to buy a bottle of augmentin and it is LEGAL here! I'm too much of a goody 2 shoes.
Oh well, it was interesting I guess. But going back to my room and getting my safe fixed was my top priority. And taking a valium for the spasms that are wracking my body. I'm laying on my side typing b/c I can't lay on my back.
Oy, tomorrow must be a better day- it's my last full day in Cancun!
Secondly, I recently saw a story on TV about these reporters who went undercover as tourists with this one middle man in mexico, and he brought them to the pharmacies that illegally sold them painkillers. He also brought them to Doctors who sold them painkillers. This middle man was taking a cut from the Doctors and Pharmacists for bringing in the tourists to these places and having them buy the drugs.
So, my guess (could be totally wrong!) is that maybe a Doctor has an "agreement" with this massage therapist that if she comes across someone who might seem like they need medication, she brings it up and if the tourist bites and is into it, then she will just happen to know the right Doctor to send them to.
Seems like it could be just a clever little way for them to help each other out, OR she could just be looking out for you.
Just my two cents. Hope you enjoy your trip and you stay safe and healthy :)
David
The premise is this: That very first initial reaction to a situation is the absolutely correct one. OBEY IT EVERY TIME!
Who knows...you are down there in Mexico--maybe she is an addict? Maybe she was going to set you up for someone to break into your room? Maybe, maybe, maybe???
The whole point--you got creeped out--enough said.
As for your back...even though she was creepy (and reacted VERY POORLY and unprofessionaly I might add)--the other one in Vegas said the same thing.
I fully understand the balance between child #1 and child #2, however---if you don't pay enough attention to either child--they are likely to set fire to the house right?!?
Go get your back checked out my friend. Do what you need to do to survive and stay safe. Take care of all your parts that are in need.
HUGS to you !
I am not sure on the other part I think she was just trying to help and really wanted you to come back so she can finish what she started. I think she is the type that likes to help people and I am not sure if she was pushing any meds but in different countries I think the med use is more lax then it is here in the states and she probably does not think about them like we do.
I would go back and tell her to hit the smaller knots, it is a treat and maybe she will do such a good job you can skip the next one or cut some costs somewhere else.
IN April 2003, I felt off. I'll save everyone the EXACT gory details but there was blood and fluid involved. I was a high risk pregnancy so off we went to Labor/Delivery. The nurse there was AWFUL. I got a chill from her right away- one of the many reactions described in the book. My body was saying "Get away!" while my mind was saying, "She's a nurse, she will help."
Nurse didn't help. She told me (after REFUSING to phone my OB who had it written on my chart to call if EVER I came in) that I was an overreacting 1st time mom and explained away all my symptoms. It was late Sat night, early Sunday morning & she didn't want to "bother" anyone.
She said I had an UTI which would explain the liquid I'd lost b/c she said it was urine, and said my uterus or bladder was irritated and that is why I was bleeding. She said my cramps were from the bladder. She was evil as evil can be, and refused assistance from other nurses in OB and the ER doc. If ONLY I had listened to my own thoughts!
Our son, Jacob, was born a day later. The cord prolapsed, cutting off his oxygen supply plus lots of other "overreacting type symptoms." I gave birth and it was excruciating. I had been scheduled for a C Section but my OB, horrified by what this nurse had done, somehow thought that the actual childbirth would help me heal "inside". She just didn't want to do the C-section, most likely.
It was a terrible birth, mostly b/c we knew his heart had stopped. The epidural wore off right away and the dr there said he'd be back to refresh it before pushing. I was supposed to be in a Twilight sleep but all those years on RSD meds and the shock made me unable to respond to the medication. I felt it all. When the doctor for the epidural didn't return, I had to push my son out. At one point I TRULY thought I had died but that part is kinda gross.
Anyway, as I held my tiny warm bundle (they're NOT blue or cold- that is a myth) and heard my husband sob, I remember thinking, "Why didn't I USE that gift of fear?" That original nurse had scared me to death. She did everything wrong and refused an ultrasound to check on the baby, which my OB did every visit. She refused everything my OB would've wanted done, then she did an "exam" so rough that it cost me my child's life!
I FIRMLY believe that had I seen anyone else, my Jacob would be here now, blonde curls and blue eyes, almost 9 years old. I buried my CHILD b/c I couldn't stand up to a bully nurse who thought she knew it all, when I KNEW what I was feeling was wrong!
When Jaden was born almost 3 years ago, I got that book out again. It has served me well over the years. It''s silver dust cover is dog-eared, but it is SUCH an important book.
EVERYONE here should read it! Fear IS a gift, and God gave it to us so we would know to protect ourselves! I failed my 1st sweet baby boy, but my 2nd son has a mom who might be goofy and silly and make people laugh, but I'm a MOM who notices everything when he is around.
Sorry for the long story but I SO had to say that. And be sure everyone knows about this book- it COULD have saved my Jacob's life in 2003. It has saved mine many times since. People like you, Oprah, my cousin, you KNOW why we have fear. And what to do about it. Thank-you- and I think when I get home I should reread it! It's been almost 3 years!
The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker- a must read.
Thanks Superduck!!
I am so sorry you and your family experienced such trauma and loss....
Your kids have an incredible Mom....... x
It doesn't matter WHO THEY SAY SHE IS; it doesn't mean that she is the same type of person OUTSIDE the work place.
In the US we all have to pass the state boards (after school) to be licensed. If an employer is hiring, its very easy to see if they are licensed. Its tightly regulated. Who knows about another Country?
She remarked on how "swollen" your back was? If that was the exact terminology she used ( and it wasn't due to the wrong translation) she should know that "swelling" can be caused by many diff reasons! Having "knots" (as she says) is not the same thing as "swelling" ( and again if that WAS what she meant) swelling is a serious contra-indication for Massage Therapy...
You are asking for opinions about these weird interactions? You are absolutely right about feeling uneasy and uncomfortable!
It seems like she is casting out the line and bait to see what she can find out.! And again NO you didn't overact one bit! Talk about NUTZO!
IMHO... I think she wanted to find out anything and everything she possibly could-- IF;
* You want to buy illegal drugs - or have money to buy -
You made the comment that she had said, "But I don't want to get you into that." ( and that she said it in a hush - hush tone.)
WHAAAAAAATTTT??!! What does she mean buy THAT???? Well whatever the reason ... ITS BAD! There is no reason she even needs to see you after your appointment! Its ridiculous and UNSAFE!
She completely over stepped the boundaries! She wants you to go in the sauna with her? What for? To talk about what? She has already told you, that she is concerned! What else is there to say to you that she didn't already go over ( which was the appropriate time ) during the appointment? Why is she SO concerned AFTER the appointment?
Your were smart and listened to your instincts about all the red flags- YaY! We should never feel guilty about judging if something doesn't feel "right."
If she thought you had medication for pain... all it takes is knowing the right house keeper...
I hope you never see this person again!
I hope you enjoy the rest of the trip! :)
P.S. Your comment about...."I have my pain doc tuesday next week and my insurance exam on Monday! This isn't the kind of thing you "mention" to a doc doing an insurance exam, is it?
Why do you think you should? I hope its not because of what that nut had to say about the "swelling" ;) LOL...
Take care and be safe! :)
Now I'm really hurting. I've spent hours trying to get comfortable in this Heavenly Bed. It's not the bed, but my back, and my leg cramps. Oddly the leg cramps are NOT in the RSD leg. They are, but different. The left leg cramping is odd- my calf feels like I ran a marathon.
I took 2 hot jacuzzi baths, 2 valium, and have no ibuprofen on me. Took tylenol with my pain meds. No matter which way I lay my head, my neck aches. My shoulders are worse than ever.
It's been 12 hours since the massage began. I was laying, watching a film and realized I could barely straighten up. But the pain is where she had her elbow in my neck, in the back of my neck. The rhomboids are sooo sore, and my lower back feels as if I've been climbing stairs carrying bricks. I have not done much today but shower, sunbathe, take jacuzzis and watch a movie.
My neck is bad- really bad. If I tilt my head back I feel a pull in the neck that is excruciating. My legs hurt, my shoulders hurt, my neck, arms and back of head hurts.
I've had a million massages. I knew it would be a harder one b/c I needed strong hands in my rhomboid area. All I feel is my rib cage pulling, pulling. No relief in the muscle spasm homes near my clavicles. Only pain and nausea.
I overdid it. SHE overdid it. I wish I had motrin with me! it's after midnight and nothing to be had. I ALMOST wish the meds knocked me out the way they did 15 years ago when I began them. I used to HATE that feeling back then but I could SO go for a night's sleep!
Whatever this massage therapist meant, and no matter how it turns out in the end, good or bad, it is so painful right now that I wish I'd never had the damned massage. She may end up right in the end that I needed such a strong and heavy hand, but if I'd known it would hurt this much, I never would've considered it.
I see my pain doc next week- maybe he will have an opinion? Or maybe my insurance exam Monday will be a good time to speak to my family doc about my back? If it was "swollen" a few hours ago, it must be a mess by now. God, Please Help me get through the night!
And IF the wind dies down and IF my back feels better, I will maybe parasail again. I've never had it hurt my back- I do it right from the boat (as opposed to the olden days of doing it from the beach or a dock!) and it is just me sitting in a harness, no pressure anywhere if done correctly. However, I don't know that I could enjoy it now.
I'm feeling sick to my stomach- didn't eat much today and am so tired but unable to sleep. Maybe some hot cocoa- I have a packet and a full kitchen- will calm me a bit. Thank God for the literally Heavenly Bed (they sell these beds!) and all the pillows. Sitting up to finish typing helped me feel sleepy so I'm going to try this again. The insomnia seems to have followed me to Mexico, although last night I slept well. I'd like to be awake early enough for breakfast one day! But if sleep is what the body wants, sleep it will get.
I fly home Thursday with 2 flights and a 4.5 hour layover! Thanks to God for the upgraded seats- at least I can lay back a bit. 1st class is much more comfy and has Direct TV on both flights. All the flying I do pays off with Platinum Status with the airline and 1st Class seats. Now, if the weather behaves on Thursday, there are no more earthquakes and my back and body heals, I might get home by 2am Friday morning!
Sorry to gripe. I guess high class problems are STILL problems! ;)
