I'm just curious about the drug Phenergan and nausea drugs.
I'm allergic to Compazine -oddly, my mom was, too. She was given Compazine when pregnant with me and almost died. If she hadn't worked in a medical clinic, she might've. But I didn't know that I'd be allergic, too until I had a kidney stone years ago. I was dehydrated & the nausea was terrible so they took me to ER and I was given a compazine-like medication and had a reaction I don't remember. They called it a something episode. I just recall they put it in my IV and I felt like I was fainting, but laying down. I screamed and don't recall a thing until the doctors surrounding my bed were saying "she's coming to" and "add that to her chart as an allergic reaction!" I swear it was like an episode of ER!
So when I started having migraines with nausea and vomiting, I was given Phenergan. It's not a narcotic, not a big deal medication, but over the years I have found that if I REALLY have a bad episode of insomnia, that darned drug works better than ambien!
I have huge sinus cavities and a dentist actually told me that I had the largest sinus cavity of any woman he'd ever seen. I get horrific sinus migraines and get terribly nauseous. When I feel one coming on I take sudafed, motrin, and phenergan. I ALWAYS sleep it off and end up sleeping well and a long time.
I never attributed it to the phenergan until last year. I felt a headache coming on and b/c I wasn't feeling nauseous yet I didn't take it. But I did think I'd at least nap ithe headache off- a short nap with my then 1 year old. But I didn't fall asleep. It's the phenergan that was making me sleep.
This summer/fall was the worst sinus headache season that I can remember and the phenergan got me through. I STILL don't know why I sleep so well from it but when I have a sinus migraine I at least know I'll be sleeping well, and it definitely helps in that way with the pain. If I'm asleep I don't feel the pain. Same with kidney stones. I take it to stop the nausea and end up sleeping as well as anyone with a stone can.
Has anyone else heard of this medication? I think the generic name is promethazine. Any reason it should not only help the nausea but also let me sleep well? I'm glad it works as I HATE nausea, but still wonder WHY an anti-nausea drug helps me sleep.
Just curious if anyone else has taken this and if the help with sleep is normal? It's certainly welcome, especially when I'm sick, but I'd never heard of it before and am still stymied as to how well I sleep when I take it. Maybe b/c I'm sick when I take it?

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
I have heard of people taking it at night to help with sleeping also.
It's certainly a double edged sword.....it's great for sleep but I gotta deal with the darn nausea to take it:-(

Just an FYI, if you had a reaction to compazine you may also to Reglan. I get a reaction on both those meds called Tardive Dyskinesia. The reactions can be mild or severe. So I say that I am allergic to both compazine and Reglan and if I need something for nausea I tell them I take phenergan. Always double check too because I cannot tell you how many times the nurse comes in with either compazine or reglan. So I ask a few times before they put it in my I.V.
So I would say that it is normal to sleep on it.

Pediatricians have used it for years with codiene syrup for coughs that nothing else would quiet.
I used to get it with demerol for migraines. I did sleep those headaches off.
So I am interested to know that they are giving it in pain management and for sleep.

i take ambien for sleep but if i just took phenagran i skip it cause at night it does help me get to sleep still
Actually, any antihistamine will "boost" the effectiveness of opiates! A pharmacist told me that last week when I called to make sure it was ok to take a benadryl with my morphine er and oxy ir--I was itching the first couple of days of adding morphine.
Of course, watch for sleepiness, and I wouldn't do it all the time, but it does work!

My old pain doc gave it to me once when I had the flu, it's the 1st time I took it. I told him it helped me sleep and he said to take it whenever I needed it, but I completely forgot about it till my last sinus infection. I was having sinus migraines daily and actually went to my Family Doc. He prescribed it for the nausea. I'd forgotten how well it works.
The worst RSD flare I ever had was during the flu several years ago. I couldn't sleep more than an hour at a time so I took an ambien, forgetting I'd taken a phenergan for the nausea an hour earlier. (worst flu of my life.) I slept so long that my husband kept waking me up to see if I was alive, LOL! I remember he told me I slept 24 hours waking twice to drink water and go to the bathroom. I recall little of it except that we were living in Houston at the time.
If I still took ambien and didn't have a 2 year old, I would definitely try that on purpose for my next bad flare up. But only if my hubby was around to check on me. I was in bad shape that day so I'm sure the 2 combined with my pain meds just knocked the heck outtta me. But how many people get to sleep through the flu?
IN any case, I save mine for my sinus migraines. I used to get regular migraines and thought they were the worst, but when my sinus cavity is involved all bets are off. I didn't know that the phenergan made the pain meds work better, too bad I fall asleep every time I take one. And it's not a sleep I can easily be roused from.
So I guess I wait for that amazing sleep till Jaden goes on vacation or till he goes to college! ;) Hmm, wonder if Michael Jackson tried Phenergan? I mean, I take valium for muscle spasms and don't get the least bit tired anymore. But even HALF a phenergan knocks me out.
