I had really strange dreams and awful mood swings and yeah panic attacks soo yeah been there and I would call that a reaction , sorry your going through that .

I have never taken this medication, but now that I know that's a side effect I will stay clear, I am also in the "panic attacks" group.

Thanks guys. My pain specialist acted like he had never heard this complaint before. Strange that I didn't have this problem with hydrocodone. Guess I can't tolerate anything that ends with "morphone".

I took it for a few days when I had a kidney stone. It was a bit stronger than the oral morphine I take for RSD and as I refused an IV (needle phobic) it was about all they could do. This was over 10 years ago but I do recall that it worked well, and no, I didn't have any panic attacks. But I was only on it for five or six days- by the end I had passed 2 fragments of a stone and a 3rd one. A VERY busy week.

Maybe the side effects hit after you've been taking it awhile? Or maybe that particular side effect doesn't affect everyone. I would advise your doc ASAP and they'll probably stop it.

I remember when I was 1st diagnosed with RSD and titrated to the dose of meds that worked for me, I had nightmares for the 1st few weeks. I didn't mind so much b/c the pain was being taken care of, but I do recall the nightmares being awfully bad. They went away as I got used to the dosage, though now and then (almost always in Winter) I have fever dreams when I get a cold or flu virus.

maybe try oxycodone if hydrocodone worked for you?

I had panic attacks when I first started the duragesic patch years ago. My doc said he never heard of that before too. I went off it but later went back on it and had no problem. Weird huh! I am now getting ready to start hydromorphone for the first time, I sure hope I don;t have any attics with it!! I always have bad dreams, I think it's from the trazadone I take but I'm used to them. They suck though!

Morphine an diaulaudid both can cause me to have extreme anxiety.

You seemed to jump from one end of the pain med spectrum to the other without trying anything in- between! What strength hydromorphone (generic dilaudid) did he give you, 2 mgs or 4 mgs? Usually doctors start with vicodin (hydrocodone) and if something stronger is needed they move to oxycodone (generic percocet which comes in varying strengths as well, 5 and 10 mgs or ER extended relief like oxycontin 10 mgs. 20, or 30, etc.) Have you ever had any trouble taking medication with a morphine base? I know when I first started with extended relief meds I was also taking the hydromorphone for breakthrough. My PM doc prescribed Opana which is the ER form of dilaudid. I was sick as a dog 20 minutes after taking the pill, shaking and vomiting. I tried for a couple of days but called my doc back and handed him an almost full bottle of opana and told them to dispose of it and give me something else. He thought it was just too much for my system to handle. Call your doctor and tell him what's happening. There are other medications out there, it's just hard to find the right one's that work for you! I wish you all the best. If you start having difficulty breathing and/or break out in a rash- go to the ER as that is a sign of an allergic reaction. Let us know how you make out. xoxoLyn

Hi Sam, I take both morphine er and hydromorphone and I've never had any adverse reactions to it so far. It sounds like an allergic type reaction to me. My dad is allergic to morphine, he gets mean as hell and very aggitated if he takes it. If I was you I'd request a change. Oxycodone works very good. Wishing you the best and becareful.

Lynr - I've been taking hydrocodone for about four years now. I told the pain doctor that I was building up tolerance to it. He kept increasing my dosage until I was on 10mg four times a day. When I started to build tolerance to that he thought it would be a good idea to switch me to something a little different. That's when he first tried oxymorphone (5mg) and then hydromorphone (2mg). But I get panic attacks with both. I called his office but the nurse hasn't called me back yet. When I get into see him I will ask about the oxycodone. Thanks.
