Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...
Hang in there. Hope you find some humane doctors. Maybe you can find pallative care, if nothing else?
But I actually went and did some more research, when I realized you weren't so much talking about the "Advanced Cirrhosis of Liver" but the "Awful Docs" and the "The fact that I was on pain meds makes me a target." One thing you need to understand here is that your Dr.'s did not take your meds away because you had a pain med target on your back....there was a very definite reason they had to stop them.
So, you can get Cirrhosis a couple different ways, alcoholism is the usual, but I have no idea if you drink or not, that's your business. What I can do is tell you why your Dr.'s took you off what I'm assuming where your Pain meds, Narcotics to be specific?
The Liver performs many important functions, such as:
1. Ridding the body of harmful substances in the bloodstream, including DRUGS (Narcotics/Opioids) and alcohol by filtering them through your Liver.
2. Manufacturing blood proteins that aid in clotting, oxygen transport, and immune system function.
3. Storing excess nutrients and returning some of the nutrients to the bloodstream.
4. Manufacturing bile, a substance needed to help digest food.
5. Helping the body store sugar (glucose) in the form of glycogen.
6. Breaking down saturated fat and producing cholesterol.
Cirrhosis is a slowly progressing disease in which healthy liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue, eventually preventing the liver from functioning properly. The scar tissue blocks the flow of blood through the liver and slows the processing of nutrients, hormones, and naturally produced toxins. It slows the production of proteins and other substances made by the liver. Its no longer able to Filter DRUGS (Narcotics/Opioids) because instead of it being a porous material it's now a chunk of rubbery scar tissue.
The most common causes of Cirrhosis are: Hepatitis C, Fatty Liver Disease, and Alcohol Abuse, but anything that damages the liver can cause Cirrhosis, including long term use of Prescription Narcotic/Opioid Drugs, prolonged exposure to environmental toxins, or parasitic infections.
As the Disease becomes more advanced and worsens, symptoms may include:
Lack of energy (fatigue), which can be debilitating
Weight loss or sudden weight gain
Fluid retention (edema) and swelling in the ankles, legs, and abdomen
A brownish or orange tint to the urine and/or Light colored stools and/or Blood in the stool
Confusion, disorientation, personality changes
High Fever
Kidney failure and Diabetes
Reduced blood oxygenation and Excessive bleeding
Erratically Changing blood counts
Increased risk of infections
Excessive Bruising and Jaundice
Premature menopause
Loss of muscle mass
I would imagine if the Cirrhosis is Advanced as you say and not terminal they'll start you on Meds to control the Symptoms and reverse the Cirrhosis. Diuretics and low salt diet to treat the Edema, Diet and Meds therapies can help improve the altered mental function that cirrhosis can cause. Laxatives such as lactulose may be given to help absorb toxins and speed their removal from the intestines. To treat Bilanary issues, Ursodiol helps move bile out of the liver and into the small intestine. If it is used early enough, Ursodiol can improve liver function. So there are various ways that Cirrhosis can be managed and improved, its a bit of a process but it can save your liver.
And yes your Dr.'s would take you off of Narcotics and Opioid medications, perhaps some Psych meds and Muscle Relaxants.....in order for you Liver to heal it has to have a break from trying to filter these kinds of meds through what should be a strainer, but is instead a rubbery clump of scar tissue. I know that having your meds taken away when your in pain seems like torture, but the truth is they could destroy whats left of your Liver or if worse comes to worse they could kill you. And if any of this is because of drinking, then you'd need to stop that as well, or your Liver won't get better. So you need to get with your Dr. and see what the plan is for controlling your pain and keeping you comfortable. There are other ways besides meds.
If things don't work to improve your Liver function and you remain in an Advanced Stage of the Disease a Liver transplantation may be needed. But we'll all keep our fingers crossed, or pray, or think good thoughts, whatever each person does, that you don't have to do that. Your a pretty tough gal, so you should come through this okay.
According to the National Institutes of Health, Cirrhosis of the Liver is the 12th leading cause of death by disease, those are some really steep odds. So you have to take really good care of yourself and do as the Dr.'s say.
So I hope this explanation works better than mentioning Hospice.
Take care and I hope your pain is able to be controlled soon!!
