Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...
Just my opinion on it though...dunno if i am right or not.
My best -opy
It sounds like they're trying to do 1 of 2 things:
1. Pain meds are cheap for your ins. co., compared to all these other treatments that aren't working for you. Could the pain clinic be trying to get more money out of your ins. co. by getting you to keep trying the stuff that doesn't work (hoping for improvement that will obviously never come) while you're on morphine?
2. Are they trying to get rid of you by putting you in a paradoxical situation and subjecting you to requirements that cannot possibly be met? How can you suddenly start showing true improvement now??? I mean, of course you'll feel better b/c of the pain meds, but that's not real improvement in your source of pain.
Wow this situation is so nuts. I really feel for you. I hope they take their paradoxical situation, throw it out the window, realize you haven't improved with the former treatments, and just prescribe you the morphine. I know the DEA is bloodthirsty, but could they really come after your pain clinic for giving you the medication you need?
With lots of caring,
Orchid
you dont sound silly.
My pain speaclist asked me to do a pain course so they know that i'm able to know how to pace and that.
Sometimes the pain clinic makes us do things to make sure they weed out the pain and the drug seeking.
I also had to real time imaging to show the pain clinic i was in pain.
Im my opinion... just my opinion... I would never go to a "PAIN clinic" because for the most part (maybe not EVERY single one- there must be at least one "good one" out there ) they are NOT out to help a pain patient... they are there to push there OWN agenda and make what?? MONEY>> thats right... and if a patient is ONLY on meds for pain...well thats NOT going to make them ANY money... its the blocks etc that are there money makers... I mean cmon its perfect... you even have to keep coming back for more and more blocks sometimes...
But yes it does make sense that they want "goals" ok fair enough... give them goals... you may or may not reach em ... but yeah --Its NOT a bad thing to make goals if they are YOUR goals and not their goals... if you want to be able to walk one block and back... then thats a goal! Write that down for them because there is no wrong answer... its what YOU can do...
Getting back to your question... yes it does ssound ridiculous to say that you were feeling better just to get medicine that just may help you to funtion better... but like I said its all a game...THEY know they are playing one...its not right -its not fair -
"it IS... what it IS"
There is a possibility that you can find a good doc...I did ...and my Dr. would never dream of doing this BS to me... she would think its demeaning and uncalled for... that CP patients have enough to deal with...
Have you looked around for a different Doc?
I do wish you the very best and hope you can find a better solution.
I would ask what if you dont get better do you just have to suffer and if you dont go to a pain clinic where do you go.
In order to continue to prescribing the meds, the clinic needs to show that you have had some inprovement with the meds. If you don't then obviously the meds are not working for you and the risk of prescribing them is higher than the benefit you are receiving from them.
This is just my take on it.

Leelew, I'm sorry you're going through this!!! I hope it works out soon... I like llady's idea of giving them YOUR goals, no matter how trivial they seem. (Hey, I'm not ashamed to say I congratulate myself for showering each day!) Make them understand that just because you can achieve small goals, doesn't mean you could do it without the meds. Funny how doctors want to focus on everything bad about meds, but when it comes to something good, like being able to shower most days :-) they don't want to think it's the meds that might be helping us to do these things. I don't believe you are crazy or stupid, just an unfortunate pawn in the doctor game. I'm thinking that looking for a new doc might not be such a bad idea... I'll keep you in my positive thoughts!!!
Much love and understanding,
Lisa
Lee there are better PCs out there. I like the idea of asking them if you can set your own goals and if that doesn't satisfy them, then start looking for another clinic. Mine is the best and my new insurance doesn't cover them but I refuse to change. I'll just somehow cough up the money. They said they would work with me until I can change insurances next year.
The last time I was especially disturbed because the doctor appeared very friendly and said that I should increase the morphine. I shouldn't suffer. So I increased it a bit. THen the next time that I went the same doctor said that I should have a shot again because I increased the medicine. It was his idea to increase it, not mine, so it just seemed to me like he set the whole thing up so that he could tell me I needed another expensive procedure.
I want someone who really seems like he's there to help me instead of milking my insurance. I have so many back problems I just think they look at me and see dollar signs!
But the whole point of me blabbing on is to let you know, I understand!!! You are definitely not alone in this... I hope you find a doctor that is going to work with you, not against you!
Much love and understanding,
Lisa
