I've only taken oxyicontin once n it worked great. Can't tell you anymore than that. It's hard to find a Dr. who will prescribe it as they say it is highly addictive, huh........ Guess some people worry more bout getting hooked on a med. then having relief from pain.......You're very fortunate to be on it as it is a very,very effective pain reducer.

I only made it through two days of 20mg. twice a day and had to stop. It completely paralyzed my digestive system.

I was on oxycontin for several years. I found t*at t*e oxy made me want more of it. I consider oxy and met*adone to be obnoxiously addictive. T*at's just me. My PM doc c*an*ed me to MS contin. It does not make me feel like I need more and it kills pain as *ood or better t*an t*e oxycontin.

I was told t*at t*e lon*er actin* oxycontin reac*es its peak after it's been in one's system at 1 and a *alf *ours. I don't know if t*is info is any *elp to you. I *ope you can *et it worked out.

I tried it for my RSD and it did absolutely nothing. Almost like it was a sugar pill. None of the narcotics made any difference at all. Just my luck...

I tried it. It always made me feel funny for 30 minutes then worked failry well. Not greatl.

My basic understanding is the oxycontin sustained release.... releases the 30mg over a 12 hour period. From what I have read a while ago peak plasma levels of the active ingredient is achieved in 1.5 to 2 hours. From there the product continues to maintain a relatively stable release pattern.

The product underwent a new formulation development to try and stop tampering of the release matrix and avoid the abuse potential of the product. Went from an "OC" stamp to an "OP" stamp on the pill.

Since this change a lot of CP patients have noticed the product isn't as efficient as the older formulation. The product isn't releasing properly in the digestive processes of some patients.

There's some great advice from the other posts, have a chat with your pain doc or pcp and maybe look at a product change if possible. I know a couple of people have mentioned Morphine ER has helped them achieve better pain management.

None of these actually works for the full 12 hours. My personal opinion is that it has reached the colon after around 8 to 10 hours and nothing is absorbed except water there.

When I was titrating up I had some that were half the full dosage strength. One day by accident I took the half dose (because it was one pill and I was still getting used to taking two. Six hours later when the pain came back, and I discovered my mistake I took the other half. That worked! It was only the proper 12 hour period amount just broken down in half every six hours.

Of course, that was not the right way to take them so I never made that mistake again.

Just goes to show that the way these meds are developed has nothing to do with actual patient care.

You have to try and get on something that can legally be prescribed every 8 hours.

sigh, why does everyone have to bring up addiction, i dont think oxycontin is any more "addictive" than short acting oxy. Isnt addiction where you take something to get high? I dont think any of us are doing this.

I just wanted to know how it released. Thanks seekn1, I feel like it gives me a good dose at 1/2-1 hr then tapers off to nothing, then im having to take short acting, may as well just take short acting all the time?

honor......im on the 30 mg short acting and it works great....as for the long acting,ive not been on it but am on morphine long acting 2 a day....

im with you...im not worried ill get addicted...tolerence maybe but right now ive had to cut back on my oxy due to not getting into new clinic in time for refills...so suffering more but ill be ok...

i hope it works out for you..i like the short acting oxy better than the morphine...i dont see the morphine working to well...since im having to take oxy for bt pain..go figure

I was on it for a short time then my insurance changed. Best relief I ever had, felt no more addictive then any other med Ive been on.
They changed it so its not able to be abused. Now some say it changed the way it works & others say they felt no difference.

Not one LA Ive heard of lasts 12hrs.
A lot of insurances wont cover it.
Now that they changed it I don't see why the doctors would have any problems. The fear was abuse & they handled that.

As far as I know you never get the true MG out of any med. I don't remember the actual numbers but this came up a lot in one of my support groups. There was a gentleman who's wife was a pharmacist & he explained how meds worked, as did another member, but I know both said you never get the full amount out of any med, not sure about the patches.

I hope I get to try it again in the future. My PM promised me if my insurance would cover it he would prescribe but he retired.
My first appointment with his partner who is younger & much more apprehensive. I finally got new insurance also. What awful timing.

Oh "Honor"able One,

I was taking five 80 mgs of Oxy a day but got cut off right before an important Hearing with my Insurance Company. They thought it would destabilize me....well I missed the Hearing as I was in the Hospital with a stroke from withdrawals so their little plan kinda Back-Fired, they were trying to show in court that they have been doing a good job of taking care of my needs! Hahaha!
That Roller Coaster stuff sux. Having the feeling of the wear off, then the waiting for the kick in seems to take up too much of the day. When you are as old as dirt like myself, you get up a few times in the night to consider that pesky Middle Eastt Crisis.........yeah right, you know why I get up but I use those moment to stay o top of my meds at the same time. From personal experience of being on Oxycontin from 99 to 2010 I can tell you that it never lasted me 12 hours; 8 at best & that was before it was "reformulated" back in Aug of 2010. The ONE med I wasn't allergic to that helped turned into a drug that not only didn't work at all but made me so very sick w/ flu like symptoms which I found was actually detox due to the way the med was changed to prevent drug abusers from using it the ways they did.
I had to go off of it after trying the new formulation for 25 days straight only getting sicker & sicker with little to no pain relief.
On the 26th day I had one of the OLD ones left & I took it to find all the bad went away in ONE dose. I couldn't get the old back so I ended up on Kadian; a Morphine capsule that is long lasting. To me much better than the Oxycontin & still works longer too.
I also found I had a false sense of energy from the old formulation of Oxycontin. When I finally went off, all my energy I once had was totally gone. I felt horrible for months until I began taking Vit B12 in December after being on B Complex.
I just don't believe this is a good medication for most anymore. I think bc they added "polymers" in the coating which is GLUE & changed it, it took at least 2 1/2 hours to feel it at all & then only made me so sick.
I also spoke to others here & on another site realizing if I could find over 100 people feeling as bad as I did after having no problems on the old kind except it not lasting for 12 hours, the FDA & company that makes it totally ruined it for everyone in REAL pain to save drug addicts? They have found other ways to abuse it or are now after Opana.
I stayed on the 40mg OC for over 11yrs until it was changed not needing a higher dose even tho I did have to take it 3 a day.
Now I only take ONE Kadian. I've been on it for one year plus but at one time it was giving me 16 hours of relief but now I'm getting maybe 13 hours but don't want to take a 2nd one I'm allowed to a day. I only get 30 a month now but my doctor had me on 2 a day & knows I have some put back.
I take the Oxy IR 15mg for breakthrough pain (going off of Percocet 10/325 after being on it for sev yrs) & feel that helps much more. In the AM I do take 2 Tylenol with it & it works better but I don't take anymore Tylenol the rest of the day when I need it.
Please look into another long acting med as I just don't believe that Oxycontin is something that helps many anymore.
I filed a complaint with both the company & the FDA on the reformulated version but absolutely nothing was done.

Yep! We all know the darn addicts who are purposely breaking laws just to get high really really matter to society.

Sorry, I am so fed up with societies "war on drugs" that is really a war on the ill.
The addicts breaking the law should be forced to have to pay our extra bills for the rest of their lives. But that would be cruel and unkind punishment. But it is OK to punish us whose only crime is having chronic pain.

It would work for me for about 6 hrs. max.
