Now that I look back on my career what mattered was the positive impact I had on other's lives. Whatever you choose to do make sure you enjoy it. I loved nursing and that is why I love being here to help others. There are patients who have returned and asked about me bc they miss me. That is what matters. In my career and my illness I have learned honesty is best bc having integrity means everything to me.

what is the differences between associate degrees here Doyou go to University and get a ba or is an assiciates degree a certificate from a college. I have never hear d of them We do not have the same in Canada. Here you either go to University to get a BA in whatever, which usually takes two years. Then you continue into what ever else you want. Then you have numerous colleges that you get Degree in Nursing, Counselling, electrical, ect. They are not the same A person with a BA get paid more that a college degree. So someone please tell me what all the kerfuffle is about between a Associate degree and a Bachelor degree. I am lost here Thanks., It doesn't matter what she gets as long as she is happy, we should all respect her decision to go to school to do what ever. bella

Isabee in the United States there are several types of school for post high school education. The first is a trade or vocational school where you get a certificate in a specific job. Common ones are vet assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse(LPN), Dental Assistant, plumber, carpenter, hair dresser. These programs are usually a year long and you go a few days a week. Tabby had posted several months ago that she was about to get her pharmacy technician certificate which would let her work in a pharmacy checking in prescriptions and doing other things to assist the pharmacist. This is a job that requires long hours on your feet, dealing with the public, attention to detail and extensive knowledge about medications.

The next level is an associates degree (AS)that is generally earned in two years. We have a huge number of community colleges where this is the common degree. It can be in almost any field. In some cases it is similar to the vocational certificates but can earn you a higher level of certification. Many nurses in the US have associate degrees from community college nursing programs.

The next level is a bachelors degree (BA or BS) which is a four year degree from a college or university. These degrees are often necessary for certain professions and in order to take certain exams. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) needs at least a BBA before they can take the exam. Many nurses receive a Bachelor of Science. As beautifulb said this qualifies them for many higher earning positions in a hospital.

Then there are advanced degrees like Masters and Doctorate. These are needed for some specialties like social work or counseling.

I think it's a great idea for anyone to go to school to advance their education. Sunny was trying to make the point that you should consider what your goal is so that you don't waste time or money. Unfortunately here in the US it is not uncommon for a 2 year degree to take 3 or more years. And a 4 year degree is commonly 5+ years because the kids don't know what they want at the beginning.

It's also really important to consider what job you are looking for and consider all the requirements of that job. Do you need to sit or stand or talk to people or answer phones? And how well can you do that with your particular situation? Also with so many people on medication it is important to consider if the job you are interested would allow you to work on medication.

Hope this helps you understand. Unfortunately it has become necessary for almost everyone to continue on after high school.

Please, as others suggested, reread what you said, you made it sound as though she was making it up and were mocking her for her SECOND degree. And you did that by actually pulling out a text she sent in the past. Who does that? Why? That was what made it seem so unkind. If you can read it and not see it, I cant help you. Im sorry. Hmm...so you haven't put me on the Ignore list, I was almost sure you had. I am not trying to attack you. But you really need to read what you write before you post it. And the fact that you can tell Tabby exactly what she posted to the date and time...ummm...the only way you could do that is if you keep track of everything she says. Why would you need to do that? She doesn't need a keeper reminding her of everything she's said. You know when I first came back to DS a year of so ago you and I were friends, we PM'd each other every day and talked about all kinds of stuff, we have tons in common, including our crappy lives. Yeah we've had crappy lives, but damn Sunny these days you are so mean, to almost everyone. I wish there was some nice way to say it, but there isn't. I realize that you are stressed and sad and lonely and just plain freaking tired of dealing with all the crap in your life, if anybody gets that I do...Sunny I've got the scars to prove it, several sets...I've been where you are too many times. But this is supposed to be a safe place for people to talk about their hopes, dreams, fears, happy times, hard times, pain, etc. without being scared they'll be rejected or attacked and you ride Tabby pretty hard no matter what she posts....Tabby didn't ask you for a breakdown of her future choices and she didn't ask for your initial attack, she just wanted to tell folks something she's trying to accomplish. And yes, I know Tabby's history, so what? We all screw up, we all make mistakes, we all say and do things that we might regret or wish we could change...you don't know what's going through her mind, none of us do. I wish that I'd not let my irritation and anger get the best of me the other night when I posted against you, because I don't want to hurt you or anyone. Hell we have enough "hurt" in our lives.

I hate that you are so miserable and there's nothing anyone can do, people try, but your not letting anyone in....I hate that your letting all the evil from your past and the idiots and hateful people that you have to deal with in your life win. Your a fighter Sunny, you've got more spunk that just about anyone else on this board, you show it when you want to....so we know you can fight and win. I know you don't like me anymore and that's fine, I'm not asking you to, but there are many great people here that you do like, please let them help you, let them comfort you and love you and help you get back to a "sunny" place. You can beat the depression and all the crap that's dragging you down and everyone here want's help you, that includes me, if there is any way that I can help you, I am more than happy too.

So in Canada you get a Bachelor's Degree in 2 years??? How do they do that? In the States it takes 4 years for the average person to get a B.A. or B.S. and 2 years to get an Associates Degree.

So what do they call it if you go to college but you just get like a Technical Certificate but you don't get a full Bachelors Degree?

It amazes me how University procedure differs between continents, in the U.K. if your going to Medical School they start you on pre-med classes straight out of High School. That blew me away when a guy explained that to me. The way he explained it it takes like a year less to get a Medical Degree in the U.K. than it does in the U.S.

Here you can just add them up I have an Associates Degree in Computer Science, a Bachelors in Accounting and my Paralegal Certificate....but it doesn't sound like it would work that way up there in Kanook land.

hi everyone, yes education is different here. My dauther is just finishing her teahcer degree. First she took a bachelor of arts for two years, and then she went into education and has just completed her bachelor of Education. So to become a regular teacher 4 years and she has two BA's When I went to school I became a health care aid a i1 year course then to become a LPN a licensed practical nurse was two years, but I could transfer my healthcare aid credits. So it ended up being a year and a half in a community college. For a registered nurse you go to University for 4 years if you want a bachelor of nursing it's another year long.. Then years before I was a hairdressor it was a two year course, 1 year school,1 year practicum , that's getting experience to pass 3 exams to get your board license. I tried to get my Social worker Bachelor deree it takes 4 years I had thrree years and could not get a student loan for the third year. So I lost three years and owed 30,000 dollarsto student loan. When I got hurt at work WCB retrained me for a Office asst, Unit clerk, but I could not do the job because I could not work.After that I became a home care asst. taking care of palliative care patients at home. You can go to tecnical school to take courses but you get certificate not degrees.You don't get paid nearly as much for this. My husband has taken numerous courses He is an electrician, welder , and he has taken management cousres. He works as a manager at a huge plant called CG Global and they have a business in the states. I think Jamestown. They make hydro transformers.He gets paid three times what my wage was nursing. Yes it is a odd way to get a education .doctor go to school for high school into premed in University it takes seven yearsto become a regular doctor. If you wantto become a specialist it takes 2-4 years more depending on what you want to take. For my daughter togo to University for education out of the bachelor of arts theethat had 300 people they only picked 8 people because they have so many international student.s So we were really happy she got picked. were proud of here she got the Valavictorian award for best marks.. She was offered the chance to go get her Doctrine but she wants to teach children not adults no she is applying for jobs as teachers.Yes it sounds very different. I am trying to get accepted to become a Applied counsellor it takes a year to get a certificate, if I went to University it would be two years.Then I can become a councellor for Grief, Rape, marriage what ever.I took a Music Teacher course and after I finished the two years of Christian college.
The government changed the school system not to allow christian colleges in. So I wasted two years of training there. If I could use all my education I would be happy.
