I bet your dog understand more than you realize. I have one who whimpers at the tiniest things at home. But at the vet he is a trouper. The other is terrified of the lights turning on and off but will take on the biggest dogs there are.
The fact that you worried about her feeling like she was back in that abusive situation just proves that you love her. Try to forgive yourself for her sake so she can have her balanced mommy back. That is what she really needs you to be for her.
