my dinner out last evening

So, I went to my hubbys friends 50th bday dinner, which by the way, is this weird? I assumed a party that they would pay, at the end she takes the check and has this sad look on her face, someone offers to chip in, then she says " If I had the party at home, I would be paying for it", then she starts to collect everyones portion. She ordered a massive amt. of food that we all shared, I would have ordered my own dinner if I would have known, our portion was 60$, with no leftovers( she took those) I thought it was handled poorly, do you? My hubby says no big deal,I could have bought groceries with that money. What would you have said or done, or was this not a big deal, like hubby says.

It is one of those social situations that happen once with someone and then I avoid it. Can't afford not to.

Usually things like that are planned ahead. If the couples plan to get together then they split the check. But if you are invited it should be the treat of the person who did the inviting.

I could understand if she was suddenly shocked by the total and a few friends said let us give you a few dollars to help out. But it sounds like she planned it that way the whole time. Why didn't she have it at home if that is what she could afford?

I wonder if your husband knew but was afraid to tell you? Just curious did you get him a gift?

I agree, they should have told us ahead of time, I would have ordered what I wanted. I gave him a card and soap( I make soap), so no biggy.
I dont think hubby knew, now he thinks he only gave her 40$ and wants to send her 20 more!

It would have been good manners to have let you know that it was to be paid by everyone.

it does sound like it was their treat to spend the evening with his friends. i've been stuck in that situation and had to pay way more than my share. hard lesson. now i bow out and do something for the person who isn't a close friend. sorry that wasn't fair to do.

I think when you are at that age when people ask you out for their birthday they should be paying they asked you out you did not ask them out. I can not believe the women asked for money and she ordered for everyone that is another indicator that they were paying as I would assume she wanted to make sure nobody was going to order a twenty dollar plate.

I am with you I dont know if I could of held my tongue. If I ask someone out to eat I pay unless I say something before hand so they know and can make their own decision if they are going since they have to pay or if lets say it is a big get together and I was just passing along the word.

your right Manny, she ordered for us that really does seem like THEY were buying. Also she ordered a big bottle of wine and desert, neither of us drink!
