Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

I've known for weeks that it was possible, but found out today that i report at 8am Monday. They disallow ANY phones with cameras (are there any w/o cameras these days? And don't allow electronics, so no Kindle. THAT pisses me off.
In addition, since filling out my initial questionnaire, I've been in the ER 3 times with kidney stones & have surgery scheduled for January! I've got so many stones in my kidneys that they'll be doing a series of surgeries in the New Year, and I'll be passing them for the rest of my life.
Add to that the cold weather approaching my RSD, and I'm going to be the most miserable person there. But there's NO way to get out of it. No doctor's note, nothing. I need to take meds every 4 hours and every 6 hours. They allow NO food or drink in the court but I'm ordered to be hydrated at all times. If I miss my RSD meds, they'll have to deal with a very angry and in-pain woman.
I don't mind civil duty, and normally would look forward to it. But this is the worst time of the year to be called. And something is up b/c every single jury group was called- not one person got out of it where it's usually more life 60/40. I'm so angry about the rules that I could scream. I could handle a short trial if I knew i had my water bottle and meds by my side, but this scares me.
Let's hope it's a short trial (especially as babysitters are 10 bucks an hour!) and I don't pass a stone. THAT would be a spectacle in itself. I feel like there's GOT to be someone there to warn, but it's a very strict court.
This month is just getting worse by the day. The optimist in me has flown away.

Have you ever read a book that made you want to travel somewhere? (And if so, did you ever actually travel there?)

Very odd. There will be ample times during voir dire (the official jury Q&A selection phase) where you could answer in a manner that would make it difficult for either side to "want" to keep you on. If it's a malpractice case, you'll almost certainly be dismissed based on your medical history and knowledge. Either side does NOT want anyone that has medical knowledge...they want to be able to get you to believe what they want you to believe.
Good luck...hope you come home after today and are done. Let us know how it went.

I was in the jury box a matter of minutes, and b/c they were almost out of people to call, they were getting nervous. PD used his last strike. I am glad b/c I don't know if my experiences would allow me to be fair. Plus the defendant was glaring at the jury, not exactly endearing!
I'm sore from sitting in hair wood benches so long (but jury box was comfy chairs) and despite being out $50 for babysitting, I'm okay. I am sorry to have heard so many details in a jury selection- they gave me bad dreams. I pray that this didn't happen to the girl (who wasn't there) but I don't think she lied. And despite the PD's efforts, the jury was mostly women. I think 2 men were chosen and the rest were women. But there were 3 times as many women as men in the jury office. Wonder why?
Oddly, I was 2nd to arrive. 1st was a man whose doctor just retired him b/c he has clots in his lungs, but b/c he already had been released from duty once, he HAD to serve. One lady had severe back problems, another had the start of the flu...I was shocked that they'd let that happen but I saw & heard it.
Oh well, thanks to lots of prayers and a something that happened to me years ago, I was dismissed. They sure do ask personal questions but many women were dismissed b/c of those questions. Now I need to try and find the case b/c I want to follow it! Nuts, right?
glad you did not get chosen to sit on a trial....
I mean, I WAS pretty much in pain b/c of sitting on that wooden bench so long, but it's b/c there was nowhere to foot my foot. Crossing my legs after awhile was too uncomfortable & my RSD foot was getting tingly towards the end, but we had our stuff with us so I was able to take my meds when needed. Still, I think I could be a good juror. Just not when we're broke, it's Christmas, it's freezing (causing foot to be on fire today) and my kidneys are full of stones too large to pass.
Maybe after a year I'll be called again. I'd be more forthcoming about my RSD no matter what time of year, b/c you may get your questionnaire in the summer and be called in Winter. My RSD in warm weather isn't as bad. But then I tend to underestimate it.
I'm just SO glad it's over and I wasn't assigned to THAT jury or any other. But I do wonder if my remarks about needing to take meds every 4-6 hours put me in the last group of 20 of over 100 people to be called. 3 groups went out while I stayed and waited. Then once they came back (those not called) they had to go a 2nd time (my 1st) to the rape trial. There were so many of us waiting to be vetted that not everyone could sit! But people were excused so fast that soon there were seats, but the PD was running out of strikes.
Crazy world we live in!
My dad sat on a grand jury which he chose to be on....he actually served for a period of several months and he was the chairman of the grand jury.....they heard case after case to decide if they should indict people. thing with that was once you serve on a grand jury it is six years before you are asked again....he never did another jury duty after that one...
Another interesting fact was that several of us had driver's licenses that needed to be renewed this year- more than the norm. My DH has to renew his by his birthday in a week so we'll see if that theory holds water, so to speak.
This state calls people who have driver's licenses, but in other states it has been by voter registration. I think that is smarter, but it would give you a smaller pool of people. It's all very interesting.
Bill-your Dad was a very good man to do all that! I think I'd go out of my mind. My big worry was Christmas and having a trial run too long, but this rape trial was only expected to go Monday & Tuesday (but jury selection took all afternoon) and then deliberations would go to Friday, they thought. I could've done that, but it would've cost us a fortune in babysitting.
Plus I STILL wonder if I could've been fair and impartial. The PD certainly didn't think so. It amazes me that something that an old drunk man did to me as a 12 yr old would resonate this far and this long. But I'll never forget the shocking number of women who had to admit (most did so at the judges desk with both attorneys & the microphone off) to any & all molestations, attacks, rapes, etc.
And if we KNEW anyone who was raped or molested, we had to tell that. One young woman kept saying she knew no one who'd ever been molested or raped. Now, I don't know where she grew up, but that just sounded off to me. As women we usually know someone...but maybe she grew up sheltered? She seemed to REALLY want on the jury (she was only 1 I could tell) and she was angry when she was dismissed. She was only like 19 or 20- the youngest one there.
It still surprises me how interesting this all was! But that was just jury selection. I think if I'd had to hear that 10 year old girl talk about what happened, I would've lost it. She wasn't there but they spoke a lot about her. And the defendant was so scary looking. He kept glowering at the jury & the PD kept talking to him, I'm assuming to tell him to stop doing it. Freaked me out.
I'm glad to be done with it. Hopefully next time will be many years from now. It's too much at this time. And the pain is worse than it's been since last Jan-Feb. I could've gone to sleep hours ago but the pain & the insomnia are too much. Direct result of the weather, I'm guessing. I see my Urologist Thursday so she can explain my upcoming surgeries and I think that is also keeping me awake. Just wish I could sleep like my DH does- lay down and bam- right to sleep!
Too much going on in my head right now, I guess. Maybe I should try a book again. TV isn't doing a darned thing. Almost 1am & I've been awake since 3am yesterday. Oh well, at least no jury duty in the morning!
