Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

Hi- I haven't been around b/c I was on my annual trip to NYC. I arrived a week ago, saw some great shows, then they closed it down Sunday in anticipation of the Hurricane. (WAY too early as we weren't hit until Monday, mid-day.) My BF and I were ready. We had a suite at the Sheraton Times Square, were told to prepare for power outages, evacuation, etc.
We were very diligent. We bought water, bread, pb&j, food, batteries, extra flashlights, etc. I was there during the blackout several years ago so I knew what we'd need. We kept our laptop, cell phones and Kindles charged at ALL times, returning them immediately if we had to unplug them for any reason.
Sunday night we went to bed. Before that we had a good dinner, listened to some wind, and watched TV. ALL NY network channels covered the storm, no shows at all. But we had Showtime and Lifetime and other channels. We woke Monday (after a great sleep b/c it was SO dark and SO quiet!) to see a bit of rain. The flooding you see on tv came from the rivers & bodies of water. We didn't get much rain in the Times Square area. No thunder, no lightening. No electricity or tv loss. It was kind of like a snow day back home, except you couldn't go out.
Monday we heard about a crane that fell partially from a building and was just hanging there in the winds. We were told that they were evacuating buildings near there for safety. We could see the emergency vehicles come and go but a huge building was blocking our view. So we assumed we were safe and continued to follow rules.
About this time, my RSD foot was starting to ache a lot. I say ache b/c that's not normally a word I use. I say "hurt". Now, with weather changes, my body does feel more pain, and that storm sure did her best to make me say "ouch!" I tried to hide it from my friend as we were so stressed already. She had to return to her home in RI for work and I had to FLY home on the 30th of October. Well, that flight was cancelled, As was every flight I rescheduled. I travel for a living so I know how it works. And I spoke to the people on the Platinum line and got info I was not happy to share. Such as, Newark Airport (the one I use to fly in and out from DTW) was w/o power and having terrible problems with flights even after power was restored. But I'm jumping ahead...
So the storm hits, we prepared, (over-prepared) and we were amazingly lucky! No power outages. Not even a flicker! We did lose ONE TV channel, an HD version of one of the networks. So we really didn't lose the network, just HD. NOT a problem in the LEAST! MILLIONS of people were out of power but not us!
On Tuesday it was quieter and we KNEW we weren't going home. But we both had high hopes for Halloween. We spent the 30th walking around a closed Times Square. A few drops of rain that afternoon but Hurricane Sandy was over in the weather sense.
Then came the worst part. We could NOT get home. No trains or buses or planes leaving. They opened JFK partially on the 31st but not Newark or La Guardia. No flights to DTW from JFK available. My airline is telling me to keep booking for the next day, then when cancelled, book again. Reports said most of us were going to stay there through the weekend.
Then my back and shoulders went. My stomach, too. Acid reflux 24/7. My RSD leg was on fire despite the fact that I was resting and taking meds on time. If I did drift off I would have nightmares. So no sleep from the 29th till I got home.
So after the hotel extended our stay (no discounts but no price gouging either!) we talked about getting a car. Long story short, we hired a car service on Halloween to drive us from NYC to Connecticut, where my friend's parents were waiting to take us the rest of the way! My pal got home and I got dropped at the airport where we had discovered a one-way ticket home (via Baltimore) that was UNDER-priced! (NOT my airline, of course, that would be convenient. It was Southwest. Dull but functional!)
It all went SO smoothly that I wish I could tell people back in NY that if they're stuck, they have other airports to deal with. After about a 3 hour ride (seemed like LESS) and no traffic or downed trees, I arrived at the airport! Then many hours later I arrived in Baltimore and then HOME by 840pm!
Now that's the story of what happened traveling. What happened with my body is confusing. I am stressed out of my MIND! I feel as if I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. We found out the day after the storm that the crane that was swaying in the wind, was literally out my window with a huge, tall building between us. It was so close. But again, we made it.
Now I'm SAFE. But my leg is twitching, my stomach is churning, I cannot sleep, I cannot relax, and I feel like crying every few minutes. Yes, my RSD pain IS worse, as are my non-RSD bursitis and pinched nerves. But I've dealt with RSD pain for 16 years. So WHY am I so stressed? I'm HOME!
I thought maybe anyone out there had info on extreme or immediate stress as relates to chronic pain? I can deal with the pain and I see my CP doc next week. But I have a 3 year old who missed me SOOO much and I him, and I hate having to tell him to be careful with hugs, etc. And he sees me crying at the drop of a hat.
I have nothing invested in NY- I feel terrible for the people there, but personally this should be over. I slept in my bed last night and am writing from there now. I cannot sleep and that alone could be causing the pain to worsen. But I'm not used to this much stress. Or how it manifests itself. I've been self-reliant for so long that I am confused by my reactions. All the bad things we heard did NOT happen to US. We were safe. It was terrifying, but we were safe, warm, fed, etc.
WHY am I still feeling this way? And is THAT causing me the extra pain? I'm just so tired, so confused. My birthday is Monday and my hubby suggested THAT might be stressing me but that was a joke.
CAN stress like this make RSD/CP worse? What to do about it? .Anyone?

I'm glad you got home safe.
really hope you can sleep and get some relief soon.
I appreciate the replies- this is an odd time of night and I wasn't sure anyone would see this. Meanwhile, I'm monitoring everything and praying it all calms down. Even my fingers ache, but I did a LOT of texting this week and I am NOT a texter.
I'm going to mention all this to my doc next week. I HATE complaining there b/c I usually have nothing to worry or complain about, but that's what they're there for, right?
Maybe after my hubby gets home tomorrow night, I can just relax enough to sleep as late as I need to on Saturday. Maybe lack of sleep is making this worse?
My other odd symptom is worrying about my plane reservation which I do not NEED! I took another airline home from a different airport. But I know that others are getting the same emails and cancellations as I am and that makes me worry. So does seeing people argue in NYC about gas or whatever. I'm worried about people getting to vote, and if this will affect the election negatively. I can be thinking of something nice and suddenly I remember NY,
I lost a child at birth. I cared for my mom till she died.I miscarried AND had a tubal pregnancy at the same time. I've lived through truly traumatic things. Why this? Why now? Sorry- I didn't expect to still be awake!
Experiencing the hardships others were going through stays there in your mind as well.
I think the best you can do for yourself is treat yourself with kindness. A warm bath once husband is home and on toddler watch. A book or something you can get lost in. Then give it some time after you have finally had some sleep.
For me the longer I go without sleep the harder it is to wind down to get sleep.
I hope just getting this out by writing about it will calm your mind enough to start you on recovery.
I was thinking the same thing! PTSD sounds like exactly what you have, Jen.. It's like you know you're safe, but your mind doesn't want to believe it.
It's going to take some time for all of this to settle down. It doesn't help that the storm is being covered 24/7. We all feel bad for those who are without electricity, but they're not going to hear about the info anyway.
I actually got so tired of listening to TWC that I watched something non-storm related. And this was when we were being hit by it (I live in NJ). You can only take in so much information before you get overloaded.
If this continues, I'd suggest you seek some professional help. I'm not very familiar with PTSD or how it's treated. But it is very serious and sometimes you can't do it on your own.
Best of luck and I"m glad you're finally home and in one piece.
Sandy
I DO have early symptoms, and I WILL keep an eye on it. I'm trying to keep myself afloat with homor, spending time with friends and my son, and today we take the kids to Chuck E Cheese. THAT can be stress-relieving.
Meanwhile I have to think about my next trip (next month I have a work trip and a car trip home for Thanksgiving. I don't want to think much about it but right now, I can try to avoid it.
I appreciate such kind words from you all. I may end up coming back if I go another night w/o sleep. But hoping I will be sleeping well tonight/tomorrow with no plans to worry about. And hubby is getting up with the 3 year old so I can rest as much as I need tomorrow. The lack of sleep is playing games with my mind. I did end up sleeping 3 hours, and it was all crazy dreams. Nonsense. But tonight I have the TIME to sleep- from 9pm tonight to whenever.
Thanks again, and Sandy- I am NOT even going to kid you about your name. I expect you've had enough of that!
Maybe that's what happened to you after learning how close you were to that crane while in that hotel.
If I remember correctly, I settled down pretty quickly after getting some sleep and remembering that I was and am safe.
Jen, I'm a firm believer in the "If it doesn't affect me directly and I can't do anything to help, then I'm not going to even watch it." War in an obscure country, a kidnapping in another state, all of the things the news wants to let us know about. There will always be bad things happening to people I don't know. My feeling bad for them won't change anything.
And I want to share something I discovered about my dreams. Every weird or frightening thing in my dream comes from an experience that I had, only it was put in a different context. As soon as I put the two together, it's gone from my mind forever.
Everyone is different, so I won't even begin to assume that my experiences might help your situation. I only hope they will. You're such an amazing person to keep such a busy schedule AND care for Jaden AND deal with horrible pain.
Gentle hugs, my friend.
Once you had arrived home to your loved ones, probably the fear of what could so easily have been a life threatening situation, took over.
I hope that you feel better soon and please know that we in the UK have been and still are so sorry for what the East Coast is going and has been going through.
Blessings,
Mary - North of England
Your body may be reacting confusingly because from the sound of your story you reacted confusingly throughout your trip...you talk of enjoying yourself, sleeping great, taking quiet peaceful walks through times square...all of these things indicate that you had a good time and also that you really didn't expect to have many troubles because the storm didn't seem to cause you any....but then when it came time to come home it was a whole different story, you couldn't. But once again that was even a mixed bag your a lucky enough person that you can afford to hire a car service and travel to friends houses and pick up a flight from wherever to get home, as to where so many others where truly trapped in NY or NJ with no options to get home.
Perhaps once you got home the stress of those thoughts hit you truly for the first time. As for the increased RSD pain that seems to be a given, when stress goes up RSD pain increases. Pinched nerve pain works in the same way, stress and anxiety causes that kind of pain to become worse.
Try relaxation exercises, calming techniques, just being in a quite place for small periods of time each day and telling yourself that you made it back home safely, your lucky that you had your options, and things can get back to normal.
Take care,
Kat
I split this cost, so it wasn't any more than it would've been. That said, the hotel we were in was one of few with electricity. IF I'd had to stay one more night, it would've been 350 a night. I had a friend to split that last night with, but I was staying on hotel points prior to that. As a travel consultant I rack up tons of airline and hotel points. And just to explain a bit more- the car service would've done this for anyone. Those who remain are paying way more in hotels than I did to get home. If my friend had left without me, I would've been in a lot of financial trouble.
And as a travel consultant, I have to point out that MANY car services are cheaper than cabs! Mine was- I'd used it for many years for airport runs. It's important to me that people not think I "bought" my way home. We had flights, trains and buses cancelled before my friend even thought of this, and the car service, having nothing to do, was happy to oblige.
Furthermore, I don' think I acted confusingly. What is confusing about enjoying the 1st part of the trip- the non-hurricane, Broadway show filled part? This is a trip I look forward to every year. My BF and I meet up and see all the shows we've talked about. Luckily, doing what I do for a living helps me with hotels and airfare, etc. It is also a Birthday Trip. My Birthday is Monday while BF's is Thursday, same year.
I don't think enjoying myself had anything to do with the later part of the trip. And the storm DID cause us problems- though not the type we'd prepared for. Hearing your 3 year old say "Mommy come home!" as trees are flying outside IS stressful.
I'm not saying that people aren't stuck there. But I AM saying that there were ways to get home. The car services were more than happy to get people to Providence Airport. It took some out-of-the-box thinking, but it had nothing to do with money. I'm just sorry more people didn't think of it.
Yes, I was VERY lucky- in that I had a friend who lived nearby. And that she had amazing parents who helped meet us to keep the car cost down, though in the end he charged way less than we'd even anticipated. I WAS lucky, it just wasn't due to money or anything I had above any other stuck tourist.
To me, it's important to recognize the stress I felt was normal. And I WAS trapped there during the storm and the day following. It may not be PTSD, but it IS a problem now. As I pointed out I have lived through worse, but THIS really affected me.
I did have rest one day, but the rest of the days weren't restful and I even used my cane, which I rarely do. The night before we left, I was up ALL night worrying that the car service would change their minds. Also, worried that we might have to rent a car and I'd be terrified to drive there. Tonight will be the 1st full night's sleep I get. I plan on taking an ambien and sleeping as long as my body needs it.
You ARE correct about getting home and thinking of all the bad things. It's gotten so I don't want to talk about it anymore to the friends and family who call. I appreciate the calls and all, I just don't like thinking about it. Maybe I will want to tell them details tomorrow or the next day, or post photos. But as of right now, I feel sick to my stomach.
I feel lucky in that we didn't lose power or get hit by trees or flooded out of our hotel.I feel lucky that this didn't happen at home. I feel lucky TO be home. But I don't feel rich or entitled or lucky BECAUSE of a car service and a Southwest flight from Providence that just happened to be ridiculously cheap. As I didn't do much shopping, I was lucky to have some extra cash to pay things off, and an emergency credit card that won't get paid off for a long time.
I appreciate your post- just disagree with the way you see things.
I also appreciate everyone else's posts- despite some opinions, this thing has worsened through the day and while I'm in no immediate danger, the headaches and the pain are making me crazy. I see my CP doc next week. I'm sure he'll agree that the stress has made stuff worse. Or the weather changes. Who knows? It's been a crazy week and I just pray that things return to normal.
I admire your tenacity in finding a way home. It took a lot of "out of the box" thinking for sure. Your experience in the travel industry sure helped you out because you were able to think about all the options and find which one was best for you.
I believe that PTSD can happen even in an isolated incident. I knew a doctor who went to Kuwait in Desert Storm and he lost it after just one day there. Unfortunately back in 1992, the military didn't address PTSD in a timely way and he didn't get any help until he came home. He eventually went into research because it was so traumatic for him (and he was a trauma surgeon!).
I hope you sleep well tonight. Lack of sleep exacerbates so many health issues and of course, the mind. We need sleep to re-group and face another day.
I'll probably be around later if you want to chat. I ran out of trazodone and am having problems getting my doc to call in a refill.
Just trying to sleep with valarian root and melatonin tonight. And it didn't help that I went back to sleep after Conor left for school and didn't wake til after 2 pm!
You're in my prayers!
Sandy
PS Happy Birthday a few days early!
I'm so sorry about your friend! All of us react differently to stress and I'm having one weird reaction. Why didn't I react like this after burying my baby boy? Or when my Mom passed? Not that I didn't grieve, b/c I did and it was brutal. But this...this is just strange to me.
I've been through hurricanes in the Bahamas and Aruba- but nothing like this. And maybe this feels more like a disaster b/c the city I LOVE and it's people are still suffering. Maybe it is b/c I left? I was just a visitor but maybe I feel guilty for making it?
I wish I'd taken more psychology in college! But thank-you. Whatever it is, I'm sure tonight's sleep will help. My hubby is home, my son is in good hands, and my foot is on fire. Time for my meds and a sleeping pill. Maybe tomorrow I'll wake up and feel differently? Just to get the knot out of my stomach would be a great start.
Thanks again, and to everyone who has been SO kind! :)
