So I'm about to go into surgery for my stuck 7.5mm kidney stone, and I meet the Urologist who will be doing my procedure. They'd just given me IV pain meds which, for 1st time in MANY years, actually went to my head, and the doctor wants to talk.
She says she looked at my CT scans and my x-rays. She looked at my chart, etc. She came in and said, "We'll get this, no worries. But have you ever wondered WHY you have so many large stones in your kidneys?"
"My Dad has them, too," I said. "I know I have more than the average woman my age."
"There's no average about it. Your kidneys are FULL of stones. I've never seen anything like it."
"That's what the ER doc told us," my hubby chimes in.
"We'll talk about it at our follow-up appointment, but you have Medullary Spongey Kidney Syndrome. Have you ever heard of that before?"
At this point, all the words are running together. I had to have my hubby write all this down. My head is spinning, and I'm staring at the IV which is making me sick to my stomach. All I know is that they stuck a needle in me, my stone is hurting, and I'm facing litho in a few minutes. Now this doctor is telling me I have yet another weird disease, as if RSD isn't bad enough?
So, no, I'd never heard of it. And I can't tell much online. I'm not awake very much yet and when I'm awake, I'm sore and tired. To make matter worse, I still feel the pain in the same area, and I have not seen any fragments in the urine.
The surgery was considered a success, as told to my hubby by the doc, but 36 hours later I'm still pretty out of it. I don't know WHY I'm not passing more gravel like after the last litho, except that the last surgery was on 2 stones in the KIDNEY and this litho was on a stuck stone in the ureter. The last 1 was on two 10mm plus stones and this is on one 7.5mm stone.
I'm not feeling the usual colic in the ureter, just the high up pain where the stone was before the surgery. I'm hoping they DID get it, b/c the pain I had after the last surgery was constant. This is more like having a kidney stone, and I'm just tired a lot. It hurts but the meds help, and actually at this moment my RSD is much worse than my stone. But it is below zero out there! My foot always goes into a flare when it gets this cold.
So I'm okay, though I'm worried about this new kidney condition. I travel for a living and I can't even think about what could happen on a plane or in a foreign country.
I guess I'll know more in a few weeks. Maybe there is a cure or treatment?

Medullary sponge kidney (MSK) is a birth defect of the tubulestiny tubes inside the kidneys. In a normal kidney, urine flows through these tubules as it is being formed. In MSK, tiny sacs called cysts form in the medullathe inner part of the kidney-creating a sponge-like appearance. The cysts keep urine from flowing freely through the tubules.
MSK is present at birth but most cases do not appear to be inherited. Problems caused by MSK include hematuria, or blood in urine; kidney stones; and urinary tract infections (UTIs). But these problems do not usually appear until the ages of 30 to 40. MSK affects about 1 person per 5,000 to 20,000 people in the United States.1 Researchers have reported that up to 20 percent of people who form kidney stones have MSK.2 MSK rarely leads to more serious problems, such as total kidney failure.
This was before the X-ray came back and this doctor was certain I was trying to pull one over on him! I remember I was like 20 years old, scared to death, and in terrible pain. And the doc was accusing me of what? I didn't get it. So they did a catheter, which I happen to be terrified of. After the catheter, the X-ray came back and they could see not one but TWO stones trying to pass.
The Urologist was called and I HEARD him tell the ER doc that I should've been given pain & nausea meds, and that a catheter was not necessary. The Urologist took care of me, telling me later that I'd met one of the hospital's biggest jerks- the ER doc.
To this day I wonder just WHERE he thought I got blood from, or how I'd get it into my urine? This was before I had RSD and there was no reason to suspect me of anything, but the amount of blood in my urine made the ER doctor suspicious. And I was hardly drug-seeking as MY stones are better treated with Toradol, a NON-Narcotic!
It's been so long that I almost forgot that awful visit, but the info about this causing higher concentration of blood in the urine made me remember it. Since then, when I've HAD to go to the ER for a stone, I've been treated kindly and with compassion. But I wish I could find that long-ago ER doc and send him these results with a letter telling him how much he terrified me and how I would endanger myself by staying home to pass the stones after that visit.

Meanwhile, I'm STILL not passing anything and the urine is dark or bloody, but no fragments. Is it possible that they blasted it into nothing? After my last litho I had lots of fragments- even 2 tiny stones. I'm scared as this is not what is supposed to happen.
