how about explaining the situation to a waiter or even telling them that u left your glasses at home if u feel funny and ask them 2 assist u with the choices ? I owned & ran restaurants . my servers would bend over backwards 2 please the public in hopes of good tips .. good luck 2 u .. warmly , starsunshine

If you have read any of my posting you will see that I leave out complete words etc. I too have dyslexia and use my spell check and recheck a lot. Left out words not so much.

There have been times when I am in a restaurant and simply cannot focus enough to venture a guess on what is listed. I just tell the wait staff that " I left my eyes at home please read for me " and there has never been an issue. I even had to have one point where to sign my name on the bill!

Please don't let this stop you from experiencing anything in life.

id like the excuse wqay better then explaining it but the problem is i cant go w/ out my glasses outher wise ti can see w/ the distance of a neibor hood block if ya can help me think of a ecuse to help id appreate it

well you could say you just had drops put in and the writing on the menu is a little fuzzy still, could they help you out, or you took the wrong glasses with you.

I waited on customers for years and they really would help you just because that's what we do is customer service. You really don't have to feel funny about telling your waitress or even explain your situation to manager before sitting down and let them tell their staff to help you.

Or you can use the 2 excuses i gave above, if i think of any others, I'll post. I'm sorry you're having these difficulties. Wish I could be more help!

I think the others have had excellent ideas so I don't have much to add except that I was a waitress way back when and I would bend over backwards to help customers so just ask hun....the majority of folks will be more than happy to help you!!!

You could point at the pictures if there is something you think looks good. People do this all the time, cuz it doesn't always say what it is in the picture. This is especially common at ethnic places.

I had another thought.

Most restaurants have menus online now. Could you look up the menu beforehand and get help with reading some of the words you have trouble with at home, then you'll know what you want before you even step foot in the place.

to me its not that simple as asking the waitress wich id hate to do to read it for me its aslo that i hate explaining becase there are ppl out there that are ignorat and also mean and i dont think id like to take chanses of any sort for bumping into such ppl i know manny waitresses would bend over backweards forr the customer but still i hate explaing it to them becase after explainign it so manny times it seems like id midaswell carry w/ me all the time a film explaning it for me wich id more then likly loose or forget to bring w/ me ither way it be a hassle

I think it isnt good to not go for food because menu is hard to read but if you go to same place two times the second time is easier because of memory of what you had before.

Also your embarrassed at having trouble due to real disorder that many people now know of by name dyslexia has many famous people who have it--jay leno is one but you might not know him being you are in England.

im not embarrased of the dyslexai i just hate explaing it and i due now of jay leno im in usa my friend jokey is in the uk

I'm not asking this to be mean, just for information sake, your an adult right, have you never taken any specialized classes to help you learn to read with your dyslexia?

If not there are probably some Webinars on the Internet that you could take that might help you get things under control and help you to read with your Dyslexia and make it easier to go out in the "normy" world.

another suggestion : call ahead and ask about the house specials and specialties , have a menu emailed to u &/or ask the waiter for their favorites . servers will not steer u wrong . again , good luck .

A lot of people in this world have different disabilities and a lot of people in public realize this and will help you out so please do not be embarrassed or stay hidden at home.
A lot of food places and even stores will assign an employee to assist you and if they don't ,they don't deserve your business
