Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

Recently i did a post on phenergan, which I take for nausea, specifically the kind that comes with my sinusitis and sinus migraines. I am leaving for Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday morning, and checked my phenergan amount b/c I sometimes get sick to my stomach in other countries. One and a half left. I had the worst sinus year of my life, 4 kidney stones and countless migraines. Still, it seemed as if there should be more. The scrip was written 7 months ago to the day and it was for 60 pills.
Now, to be honest, I often take just enough meds that I need for a trip and take out the remaining pills. IF any pills are going to be stolen, I don't want it to be ALL I have. It's possible that I did this and somewhere there's a remaining 20 pills. I don't know. It's JUST as possible that I took them, given that I am used to taking phenergan when flying (I flew over 80,000 miles last year) when having migraine, kidney stone, stomach flu, and on at least 2 occasions, to help me sleep. (As discussed in the Phenergan forum, it does make one sleep better.) SO I'm GUESSING I took them but it wouldn't shock me to find I'd left/lost a bottle while traveling.
Anyway, I called my family doctor today to get in for an appt. He's the one who writes these, they're not for CP they're for sinusitis and kidney stones. He was out and would be out all day Monday. I leave 5:55am Tuesday. SO I am talking to the lady at the desk and she says I can just request a refill as there's no medical reason for me to be seen right now. She'll request a refill and wishes me luck on my trip.
AN hour ago the nurse calls. I'm not asking for anything strong and even when I broke my ankle and tore open my foot requiring 21 stitches did I ask my doc for pain meds. Nothing he'd give me would work as well as what my old doc gave me, and HE always said I could take extra for things like that, but I never did.
This nurse reminded me what it was like when I 1st had RSD but hadn't yet been fully titrated or diagnosed properly. She called to ask WHY I needed the meds. Um, b/c I get nauseous? I explained nicely that I had a bad sinus year, that I was leaving Tuesday out of country and didn't like to fly w/o the medication.
She then asked me how many I use. I said exactly what I wrote above. She sounded angry at one point, nice at another. She asked questions about the sinusitis and said it wasn't normal. I told her my hubby and entire family in WI had ALL mentioned at Xmas that it had been THEIR worse sinus year, and that a dentist had once told me that I had the largest sinus cavities of any woman he'd ever seen.THEN she says, "What's your dentist's name?" I was floored. Was she gonna call him?
And of course I'm watching my 2 year old, running a bath and talking all at once and I said, "I'm blanking on his name but he practices in****" So then AGAIN with how many do you take? And over and over till we've done a full conversational circle.
THEN she asks me if I want to see the doc. Now, I'd asked this morning for any appt on Friday or Monday but he was off. Now she says they got the Monday schedule wrong and do I want to be seen. This late in the game, I didn't WANT yet one more thing to worry about before a trip like that. So I said, "If you NEED me to see him, I will. But I'd prefer not to be running around all day Monday when I have an early flight Tuesday."
If I needed to see him to get me enough pills to get me through my trip, I will b/c it IS a new country, one where I don't speak the language, and my sinuses are bugging me already, so nausea I know, will follow.
"I don't need you to see him, I just hope I don't get in trouble."
"For nausea medicine?" Then I told her IF she felt she would get in trouble, to NOT fill it and I would take my chances. It wasn't a huge deal. And she said, "Well I already sent it through." WTH? After all that?
I am SO confused! This isn't my pain doc where years ago I'd expect that kind of stuff, but does she think I'm abusing an anti-nausea medication? 60 pills in 7 months with my history of kidney stones, flu, and severe sinus migraines is nuthin'! My old pain doc would give me a refill every month if I needed it- I almost always left them unused.
It isn't until after we hang up that I realized why this "chat" bothered me so much- it felt to me as if it were a power trip! I've NEVER asked this doc for a thing, not even a refill for my asthma inhaler, w/o seeing him. I HATE these kinds of requests b/c they make ME feel like I'm doing something wrong! And my doc is sweet, soft-spoken and kind. When i asked him to take over the phenergan last year he didn't have a problem with it at all.
And then it hit me. She had my CHART in front of her. It says on there what I take for RSD and probably the most recent thing she read was
that my pain doc died and I needed a referral. She wouldn't have spoken that way to a non-CP patient.
I'm just confused as to why she needed SO MUCH info about why I take the drug when it says so in the chart. And the tone she took- that was straight out of the "we're better than you" handbook.
For those of you who have to deal with people like that on a monthly basis, I am sorry. I've been treated so well so long (with one small bump when my doc died) that I'd almost forgotten that unless we're dying, they will always assume we're "less than" for using opiods.
I'm not saying all nurses or docs are like this, or even that she was THAT bad, but I don't LIKE being spoken to as if I've done something wrong. The chat ended nicely, she wished me a good trip, but it rubbed me the wrong way. If I'd been asking for a pain med or something, maybe I'd get it, but an anti-nausea drug? And it wasn't even so much WHAT it was but that I was finally asking for something. They're not used to it.
Ugh, what a day. To top it off the pharmacy closes in 10 minutes and my hubby is bowling so I won't know if she refilled it or if she sent like 5, which means I won't know if I can take half of the one I have left tonight or wait and see. This bloody MI weather is killing me! It's either cold so my RSD flares or it is too warmish/.humid and my sinuses go nuts. Can't win!

When I get some time off I want to write an article about CP. That story is perfect for what I'm going for. If I ever get the time off, I'd love to talk to you, via email or PM or whatever. People need to know what CP patients go through, and if I can't write it myself I want to bring this stuff OUT of the shadows and into people's minds.
SO sorry you went through that!
The nurse, let's call him X, seemed to not really like me strait away. We just seemed to rub each other the wrong way. Well, the first thing he said is you certainly don't have Vertigo! I clearly stated I have never had vertigo or do I think I am having it now. He never heard me I might as well as been dead. My friend was standing right there she said the same thing to him and he ignored her too.
So because this idiot launched off into this lala land of Vertigo World that is where he stayed. Every time a doctor came to discuss my case they talked about Vertigo. And not about me having Vertigo about the fact that I couldn't have Vertigo. I HAD NEVER SAID I HAD VERTIGO! What I wanted to find out was what was causing my vision issues. Of course I was sent home not knowing a blasted thing. Only that they were certain it was not Vertigo on the say so of the idiot nurse. After going home and doing my own research I found that a medication I had recently been put on was the culprit. I took myself off the medication and my vision improved. It would have been nice if the doctors had done their job.
Hug, Cathy
Don't be surprised if that info on vertigo is in your chart! I had a problem with a replacement doc who said that I'd told him it wasn't "fair" that the new doc was taking me off most meds. I NEVER said it, thought it, etc. Then when I saw me old doc (then he was a new doc) he read that and laughed. He said he read so much CRAP in medical charts that it made him sick. Too much power corrupts!
I'm sorry for you!
i didnt go there on my own free will..my pcp made me go!!!!!......ughhh

Ive been put through a very painful procedure because the stupid young MA freaked over my med list & the doctor did not give me chance to explain.
So here I was off most of me meds as directed only to be told I would have this gyno procedure with nothing. Usually the patients are given something to relax them which I declined & an injection for inflammation which I was counting on. I also declined any & all pain meds.
Idiot, so not only did the procedure hurt like hell but my back froze from laying on the hard table without my meds.
Now because they could not allow me to go home til i calmed my pain & vitals this doctor knew something was wrong. He spoke to other doctors about CP & PM & learned he made a huge mistake.
He actually took me aside & apologized over & over. He also said he would handle his MA. He said you are my first CP patient.
You better believe I told him I doubted that & because of my treatment others are fearful to come forward.
He assured me I'd have the best of care & not one of his staff would offend me in any way. He also asked if my husband wanted to punch him for what he put my through,LOL,. I said yes indeed he would.
That's just one story & I am learning to stand up for myself & cope. Created a huge fear of new doctors.
I have to say I would speak to my doctor about that nurse. You have a very painful condition & its not her job to judge you when she is not prescribing anything for your pain.
Some times staff is out of line. If you say nothing then it can happen again & to others but I realize you take a chance of offending the hand that in some ways feeds you.
I'm sorry for every single person who is judged for something they simply did not ask for. Can be as hard to handle as the pain.

Respect for our dignity isn't much to ask?
Respect for all those suffering, using this site for support, my be in order too!
Why do people treat us like we have something that they might catch? That we want something from them all the time?
I know the sinus pain and the nausea from it - that can be so debilitating. I have to toss up which is worse - that pain or the sciatica - I think the sinus would win.
Hope that you got your refill and had a good trip.
Now I just pray that we're all better before I leave for Punta Cana on Tuesday morning! I will be awake in 24 hours finishing my packing as I have to be to airport by 4am. Normally I stay out at the hotel at the airport before an early flight, but I want to be here in case my son is still sick.
That nurse really helped me out b/c I cannot even imagine having to vomit on a plane. My sinuses are all messed up and when people don't close their shades (nothing to see once we're above the clouds) the light hurts my eyes. Not to mention the ruining of the in-flight entertainment or glare on my laptop. I just know that we'll be flying straight into the Caribbean with all the shades open. (My biggest travel pet-peeve.)
Oh well, I have today to pack (where DID I put summer clothes?) and then a short night's sleep, and off to the airport and a 5 day trip.
I just hope the flu bug is gone and the sinus migraine fairy stays away! ;)
I will get back to you, but to make a long story short, when the ER doc found out I was a chronic pain patient I couldn't even get passed the nurse. The doc on duty refused to even see me.
Grrrr!
Deb
To answer your question, I rarely am able to sleep on planes. I'm usually working on my laptop for the upcoming meeting, or relaxing and watching what I want to watch as opposed to my 2 year old. Continental has many flights with Direct TV and it's relaxing to sit back and veg out.
Also, I get migraines, and wear sunglasses if someone in 1st leaves their shade open. It doesn't happen often, but I wouldn't be "cross" with you. It is a pet peeve, as it is with many frequent fliers, but I wasn't raised to be rude so I wouldn't say a thing.
It's on my mind b/c tomorrow's flights are both during the day and I know it's going to be a long one. In addition, we're flying an older aircraft that doesn't have the direct tv and personal tv sets. It's easier to control glare on those. But I'm armed with sunglasses, a laptop, Kindle and lots of work. Hopefully my hubby (who is home sick) will be feeling better AND I won't catch what he has.
Note to self: pack sunglasses and Immodium! ;)
