For years, since I was a small child, I've watched the Oscars every year. I would drink ginger ale from my Mom's (and later, my own) crystal flutes, and eat Eli's cheesecake topped with cherries. I'd write my own list of winners and seal it and give it to my mom so I couldn't cheat. (One year I entered an HBO contest and won a Oscars Movie Lamp!)
I used to see a movie every week back then, now I'm lucky to get out once every 4-5 months for a movie. As a kid I was in acting and did local commercials, and was SO sure I'd be a famous actress or writer. I would practice my Oscar speeches in the mirror, and write tiny novels about HOW I'd get to be so famous, LOL!
A few years back when I got RSD, I tried to keep up and at 1st, I did. But the older I got the more running around I did for work and with hubby, etc.
But as HE loves movies too, I at least saw MOST of the nominated films.
Now, as a mom to a 2 year old, there are SO many I wish I'd seen. I saw only 1 nominated this year that I know of, "The Help" which I LOVED. It shows me that the pain really has affected a lot of my life that I haven't acknowledged. My friends are shocked that I am not getting the cheesecake ready, that I can only think of one film I've seen, etc.
I can blame it on my son, or I can be honest and say that I'm just too tired and often, in too much pain to go to the movies. That's one of my late New Year's Resolutions- to see more movies and get out more.
Anyway, is anyone else watching? Here on the East Coast of the US it starts at 8:30pm. I'm hoping they do some sort of nod to Whitney in the part where they acknowledge the stars who've passed.
Oh well, at least it's a way to pass the night! ;)

My favorite (and most difficult category) is best Supporting Actress. How can I choose between 2 of my favorites from "The Help" Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer, and of course, Melissa Mc Carthy from "The Bridesmaids". I'm BETTING that Ms. Spencer will get it, and she is quite deserving. I would have had a very hard time choosing between Melissa McCarthy and Octavia. Actually, all 3 are phenomenal but I think the gold should go to Octavia. That performance was brilliant! If it goes to the other 2 not mentioned here, I can't say much as I didn't see their performances. But it is nice to see the Academy nominating comedic performances!
As for Best Actress, I'm torn even though I didn't SEE most of the performances. I've HEARD that Meryl Streep was amazing and she hasn't won since the 80's. I KNOW Viola's performance in The Help was spectacular. Glenn Close is always good. I wish I'd seen her performance, and Michelle Williams as Marilyn.
Damn- wish I could run out and see all these movies before it starts in 2.5 hours! Guess I'll just go on gut this year- other than "The Help" and "Bridesmaids", I didn't see the movies for my favorite 2 categories. ;(
I'm gonna take a warm bath so I don't have too many leg spasms (can't take my muscle relaxant or I'll fall asleep) and be back to watch what I missed on DVR before the show starts!
I also only saw those two same movies, both I loved. (Bridemaids and the help).
I like the pomp and show and I love it when really famous actors goof off on stage making fun of themselves or give a really heart-warming speech.

I love to write fiction and have often thought of kid's books (my brother is an artist and I always thought we'd be good at children's books) but to get published you need to know someone who can get you an agent. And to get an agent you need to be published! Nice, right? ;)
I've always said I was born in the wrong generation. 35-40 years earlier and I might've had a chance, LOL!
