Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

As an RSD patient of 14 years, I've recently come to a difficult fork in the road. Today was an especially difficult one and I'm trying to find a solution. As many here know, my doctor passed away and I went to a so-called pain clinic here in Michigan. They didn't talk about RSD or anything, they just convinced me I needed to see a 2nd doctor at an affiliated clinic. I would come to find out (a week or so ago) that it was a suboxone clinic. So they want to hospitalize me, take me off all meds and put me on suboxone. I have done my research and actually fear this drug. So I wonder, what if I have my foot (the one afflicted with RSD) amputated? I wouldn't have the pain to deal with so I wouldn't need the suboxone. And with the advances in prosthetics, I could live without a foot.
When I was 1st diagnosed with RSD, one of the doctors half-heartily tossed out amputation as an option. My doctor at the time, a Physical Medicine Specialist, said that IF I did that, b/c of the way RSD works, I would probably feel phantom pain that was as bad as the RSD pain. But is that even possible? I mean, to me, RSD pain is the worse thing in the world. I'm tired of fighting this ridiculous fight about pain meds. I want a solution, not just a ridiculous treatment like suboxone.
I've been very lucky in that my RSD has been treated very well over the last 14 years. I had two VERY good doctors. But times have changed and CP patients are treated like dirt. I don't know what to do, and the truth is, amputation COULD free me not only of the pain, but of the medication.
I'm tired, my spirit is broken and I feel like I've been lied to by doctors and nurses who should be doing what is best for me, not what is best for their bank accounts. I'm a patient who cannot be helped by their injections and procedures, so one man decided my fate. And they know they have me, b/c if I don't take the suboxone treatment, I could die from withdrawal.
Is anyone here familiar with phantom pain? What would my chances be to get through it all without phantom pain? I'm a strong woman and I've got to make a choice or go crazy. I'm having nightmares and I feel like my quality of life is dropping by the day. I've never been this scared.
While there's a CHANCE I could find a doctor who would treat me as I have been treated, it's difficult to know for sure. And I do NOT want to end up on suboxone. I have about a month before I'm out of meds.
So I wonder, is it just this bad day that makes me believe in this option, or is it really a possibility? I mean, it sounds drastic, but if chopping off the foot could end this agony forever, it's worth considering. I'm just curious if anyone else has done it, or considered it.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
I know a man who lost his leg because of a motorcycle accident and had to deal with phantom pain that had him crying. Ironically, it was Suboxone that helped him the most and he is still taking it.
May I ask why you think you could die from withdrawal if you do not take Suboxone? There are many, many different pain medications. One, or a combination of some, may give you the kind of pain manhaagement tht will help you to live life as comfortably as you can.
Making decisions based on fear is not an effective anecdote for relief. Fear magnifies, not clarifies.
The only person who decides your fate is you. I am sorry that you have had to deal with people such as you have...but there ARE good doctors out there who care and who will help you. Seek them out.
In the meantime, be gentle with yourself. And do find someone you can talk to about your feelings, such as a grief counselor. CP is traumatizing. Getting help for our emotions is a good way of helping us with and through our pain.
My heart is with you.
Gentle huggggsssssssss to you.
Please trust me there is always hope....... 2010 was a horrible year for me, but I'm still here, because of hope.
Don't do anything as drastic as cutting off your foot. That is not the answer!!!!
I want you to fight for your rights for proper pain medication. There are a lot of Doctors out there that are willing to help, that are compassionate, that are going to listen to you.
Do Not Give Up!
Promise Me Do Not Give Up!
I would be very hesitant and careful.
research research research
And I will pray that pain eases up.
I hope you find a good doctor that will work with you and you don't have to take such drastic steps to have your foot amputated.
Not quite the same but I had all my teeth pulled hoping to relieve alot of my facial pain. No teeth and the pain is still there.
Sending Hugs and Prayers things work out for you soon.

i remember when i had 4 root canals in half as many months... it hurt so much, one of them failed and had to be redone, by the end of it, i was dependent on vicoprofen and determined that the only solution was to have all of my teeth pulled and replaced with dentures. serious. it was months of pain, one er visit... the whole thing was just too much.
that's how upset i was having to deal with all of that.
i can't blame you at all. keep looking for the right pain management and allow yourself to indulge in whatever thoughts make you feel better.
i used to dream about a lavender translucent pair of dentures.
think about how you might "bling" out your prosthetic. and while you aren't doing that, figure out how to get the pain treatment that you feel you need. take care. thanks for telling us this.
There has to be other Doctor's that you could see, and they can treat your pain. Go check this website; www.doctorsforpain.com,. and check for PM Doctor's in your area, there is also Dr.Batson, he is here as a member but he treats people in pain, I don't know if you have read his message below, but it is someone that can help you now.
An amputation is not a solution, I don't know if you have heard of "Phantom pain", but most people that go through amputations have this type of pain, and it is as bad or worst than the pain that cause the amputation. Try to find a good PM Doctor, and think about it easy and without doing anything to abrupt, OK?
Take care,
take care I hope you can find a solution that does not involve the amputation
A friend of mine has RSD (result of a botched op under WC) it is in many places in her body but especially in her legs - including the "rash" - "eruptions".
She talked about amputation of the worst leg too but didn't get it done.
Like some here have mentioned she realised that the phantom pain would be a problem and she didn't want to deal with that.
BTW I hate it when the medical people try to push a certain drug on you - it is usually so they can make another billion or so dollars.
