For the future I would go one of 2 ways. 1 is to get it in writing that you can return the chair. If you explain to a manager why they may work with you. 2 is to sit in the store for an extended period of time. If you explain why to a clerk they will probably be cool with it. And if they're not, why give them your $?
My pain is relatively minor. I just have cfs. Like sometimes the joint by my elbow hurts a little bit while resting...so weird. And I have headaches that go away with over the counter pain killer.
I have learned I'm more sensitive now. After getting cfs my boyfriend would rub my feet too hard. It hurt real bad. I'd ask him to be gentle and he just wouldn't. Then I had the fibromyalgia test. This involves pressing gently in a number of places, like on the back or on your hand. Enough "yes it hurts" and you have fm. I was too short. I was like oh....so it's because my feet are more sensitive now... Seriously, I didn't know until that moment.
That's only fair!!! Nobody loses!!!
