I was just reading about this recently for my husband, but his stuff is asthma related. But, here are some possibilities that can cause what's happening for you: non-asthmatic bronchitis, post-nasal drip that effects the upper airway, vocal cord dysfunction, gastric reflux disease, allergies and sinus issues. Lots of things can cause a persistent cough, but it;s been going on for you for quite some time. It seems that you need a full evaluation to identify what's going on. Even though it comes and goes, coughing takes a lot of energy (something those of us with CFIDS don't have a whole lot of!), so you probably need to get a medical work up.
