Earlier this year I posted asking for advice on getting a cat. I had been considering it after my daughter kept urging me to do so, she said I needed a furball to curl up in my lap and make me feel better and keep me company.
Some of you offered your own stories along with some very helpful advice and I am so very grateful to you for that. In February I brought home my Ozzie from a resue shelter.
After all these months I don't know how I ever survived without him. I know some cats can be aloof and I wanted one that would be easy to hold and handle. I wisely chose a very needie cat, by needie I mean he wants to be with me, and only me, when he is awake. He warmed up to me very quickly and he's made it clear that I belong to him. He has his early afternoon time that he spends in his cave (the linen closet), but after that he wants to be in my lap as much as possible. He will curl up as close as he can get to my face, lay his head in the crook of my arm like a baby, and stretch his paw out to lay on my chest as if he's holding on to me. My husband can still not get over how human this cat seems when he's in my arms. He entertains me when he plays with his mice, he's someone to talk to who doesn't care what mood I'm in, doesn't judge me by the sound of my voice or the look on my face, lays quietly next to me in bed if I just can't handle him on my lap, will lay in the strangest places just to be close to me. It is oddly comforting just having him nearby.
This has been the worse year for me, I'm still not doing so great and the holidays have just been such a struggle. But my Ozzie has been the most wonderful therapy, friend, and cuddle-baby.
As I write this he is sprawled across the computer desk in front of the monitor, waiting for me to get off and play 'catch the mouse' with him.
I know many of you have cats or dogs or birds, and I know you all understand what I mean. How important they become to us, and how some days if feels like that's all we have.
I just wanted to share that, and to thank you all again for encouraging me to take that step.

I have a wonderful cat, Willow. She sounds much like Ozzie, in that she loves to be held and is never aloof! She wants my attention 24/7. I just love her. She warms my heart.
Truly loving an animal is a gift from the heart and the rewards are endless.
