I take amitripyline, have done for over two years now.

I take it for exactly the same reason, neuropathic pain and sleep.

I take 10 mg 12 hours before I want to wake up, so if I want to rise in the morning at 9 am I take it at 9pm. The reason for this is that if taken later I find it hard to be properly awake in the morning, an hour after taking I start feeling relaxed and sleepy and usually drift off with no problems. I tried increasing the dose to 20 mg but found it left me feeling hungover and sleepy the next day but that could just be me, the next person may do just fine.

It has helped improve my sleep, definitely better quality now. It does help my pain a little, it hasn't taken it away completely but as I have so many problems with regular pain meds ( stomach issues ) then I will stick with it.

The only noticeable side effect I have with it is a dry mouth.

I was on that medication for about 6 months, I slept very well, too well lol. you can feel more tired in the morning, especially while the medication is still in the system. The medication did not help my pain at all but I have herd it has helped others. xx

thank you for the replys .. she has been on it 6 nights now an is sleeping sounder .. she still in pain but saw DR again today an he said when we increase to 20mg it should help more with pain .... fingers crossed :)

I've taken amitriptyline for years. Originally it was prescribed for headaches. I had migraines and it did the job. I haven't had one since I started this. It also has pain relieving properties.

It's a good drug and safe. I would recommend it.

I used it for anxiety, sleeping and pain. It worked really well for me, but I did have a groggy effect when I woke up. I've been switched to Klonopin and don't seem to have the grogginess problems anymore. However, when it came to the uses I needed it for - it was amazing.

I have been taking this med for three years now. I have never had the typical sleep isssues that people with fm/cfs tend to have. This december my script ran out and it took about a month and a half to get the dr apt., mail med service and finance figured out. Within two weeks i couldn't sleep and became depressed. Boy did i miss my med. I was unsure that this med was doing anything for me. I never had any depression prior to starting this med. Boy was i wrong. This med made a SLIGHT difference in pain and the pin sticking pain that my fm brought. I'm now back on and my sleep patterns are much better and the electric feeling pin pricks i was experiencing are gone again.

This med helped me but im on a larger dose. I take 100mg. Your daughters dose is quite small. I have experienced no side effects from it. Good luck with this med.

Hi, I am sorry your daughter is unwell but at least she is getting some treatment. I too take amitriptyline, 30mg. It was prescribed for restless leg and peripheral neuropathy. I live in Scotland which lets you know that this is internationally recognised as a good medicine for pain and sleep aid. Unfortunately, I find after a few weeks that I have a sort of build up of all my pain meds which leave me really groggy in the daytime so I do try, if possible, to have nights without it. Your daughter may not have the same problem. With this illness and associated illnesses as there is no cure, we just have to try to find what works best for us as individuals. I wish her better health.

Hi there, I also take amytrip. 100gm and have been taking them for years. I was put on it not for depression but because I was so sick that I couldn't tolerate any noise. I was bed bound with earplugs in and could not interact with my young family, they certainly help. I am still on a high dose and I sleep well, worth it for me.

thank you all .. she has now been on it for just over 2 weks with no side effects at all .. Dr is upping to 20mg now as its helping a little with pain an sleep .. It helps so much knowing how it has helped you all :)

I've been on 20mg. for 10 years for sleep and irritable bowel. It is an old drug and non-toxic. it works great for me. Isabelle1954

My 16 year old daughter has taken it for nearly a year. She is on 60mg at night to help with severe migraine and aid in sleep. I helps her sleep well and has aided in helping the headaches, though they aren't completely gone. Good luck.

@anna wow you are right this med does help with sensitivty to sound. I never put those two together. The extreem sounds are more tolerable now but not gone. It improved when i started this med. every afternoon i wouldfind myself in bed with ear plugs and a sleep mask being driven insane with too much stimuli. Right now my sons video game is driving me insane. I can take care of that with volume and still able to live my life somewhat LOL.
