CHRISTIAN PARENTS of ESTRANGED ADULT CHILDREN Community Group
Estrangement makes it difficult to talk about with family, friends, neighbors and church members. Christians are NOT immune to broken families. Talk about your experiences with those who know how you feel and get positive support through your Christian faith...."In these last days difficult times will come, for men will be lovers of self...disobedient to parents,...
You and your family are in my prayers.
This then gave me the idea that if I read the Word of God outloud to myself so that I could "hear" it that I would increase my faith and not be full of fear and anxiety, so I began to read the book of Psalms, one of my favorites filled with God's promises to us, outloud to myself until I felt peace in my spirit. It worked and it continues to work for me...always!! My favorite Psalm is Psalm 91.
I pray the Lord reveals this truth to you also edr1961 and that it brings you peace!
I can sense in your choice of the word "helplessness" that you feel overwhelmed right now. When I would feel this way, I knew I had to find something productive to pour myself into to keep my mind off of those overwhelming feelings. I also knew that if I could be kept distracted enough long enough from the overwhelming emotions that I was feeling, that time would find me in a different place when I stopped long enough again to think about my EC. And when I eventually did stop long enough to let myself reflect upon those feelings and digest the current situation with my EC, I found I had grown strong enough again to move on from there.
Helplessness and being overwhelmed are feelings God gave us to know that you have all you can do to deal with your own emotions and just need a time out. Time out is not "not caring or saying it doesn't hurt" or even indicating that you are ok or have accepted the situation. Time out is putting it neutral for a while. It's healing! It's strengthening! It also allows us to refill our emotional bank with some positive deposits. Like just a peaceful day for instance, or a productive day of getting something accomplished.
The Lord taught me this through this verse-->>Phillipians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
I came to understand that if I could not look back like Lot's wife to the "bad reports about my EC" and just stay in the present moment and do what this verse says...especially find things to think on that were of a "good report" and then Praise the Lord for them, as I kept busy in the moment, and let tomorrow take care of itself...I began to grow strong enough to not feel overwhelmed or helpless. Many say "the Lord was my strength or that the Lord got me through this"....and HE DOES but I get frustrated when they leave out the "how" because sometimes I can't read between the lines and need detailed instructions...these above "suggestions" are the details of how God got me through day to day.
