CHRISTIAN PARENTS of ESTRANGED ADULT CHILDREN Community Group
Estrangement makes it difficult to talk about with family, friends, neighbors and church members. Christians are NOT immune to broken families. Talk about your experiences with those who know how you feel and get positive support through your Christian faith...."In these last days difficult times will come, for men will be lovers of self...disobedient to parents,...

I think because the family are people, with personalities, and the EC seems to view himself or herself as the only one with needs, or allowed to have a personality. Or simply can't handle intimacy with the other people as just one of them, as they perceive themselves to be the center of everything.
Also, they (the EC) may feel different from, neglected by, and/or or superior to, the whole family.
This is all hard to articulate, but it is how I would explain it based on my experience with ED rejecting the three of us.
This was in reference to ritt4me's original post.
Although as a blanket statement this is likely true, there are times when a family is dysfunctional to the point it causes stress for some of its members. It is important that we all take a very serious look at ourselves and make sure we are indeed not creating stress for those around us. There are situations where one person has become the family scapegoat, for example, and in this case the family would be causing stress for that one particular person.
I am the family scapegoat, and only recognized this at the age of 50. My life on a daily basis is peaceful and drama-free, but when I get with my family my stress level goes way up and I feel unsettled. This is obvious when you look at photos of me with others, as opposed to photos of me with my family. For this reason I'm starting to detach from my siblings (but staying close to my father). It's possible this could be the same situation for ritt4me's son. Maybe not, but just thought I'd add some insight.
We sheltered them when young without thinking. Even to the point of putting them in private Christian Schools, and later home schooling when private schooling was no longer an option. But once they were young adults looking for mates, never gave it a thought about who they were being exposed to. Naturally they chose a spouse from their pier group, and later DH and I found out that much dysfunction was hidden in the in-law family when all of our Estrangement troubles began due to this family's influence on all of us!! Why did we not suspect prior to the engagement....because it was the pastor's kid our kid fell in love with! Now to be fair, our DIL has much potential and is a good mother, but due to being taught to idolize her father who has now gotten so dysfunctional in his behavior that he's went from pastor to cult leader...our DIL is being brainwashed into thinking that we are wicked for leaving the "cult" that that individual church has become.
