Honour your mother and father

Dear all: I am curious about something. As my husband and I have walked this painful road for over three years now, I have begun to notice something interesting as I talk with others and listen to their sad and heartbreaking stories. It appears our children's generation has a totally different perspective on what it means to "Honour your father and mother." I would be interested in hearing from other parents going thru this nightmare, just what "Honouring your parents," might look like to them, giving some actual concrete examples. In our case, one thing that would mean so much to us and make us feel honoured and respected would be to have regular communication from our adult children and equal opportunities to spend time with our grandchildren as is given to the other set of grandparents. I am just curious as to how the principle of "Honouring your parents" might look to other parents. Signed "Just wondering"

Just Wondering, My husband of 32yrs. & I raised our children in church as well. Our AC are 30,29 &26. I had problems with our eldest daughter starting when she was 15. Her & I have had our ups & downs. Soon as she turned 18 she moved out. She has always(since 15) criticized my every move. She really thinks she's. better than us, but daddy did no wrong, as I was mostly the diciplinearian. We have taught our children 10 commandments, etc.... I'm not sure how old she was, maybe 23, when I mentioned again, the Bible says to Honor your Mother & Father. You know what she said to me? "You have to respect me first!"Seriously? That's what my ED thinks about Honoring her Mother? My husband had a talk with her after that & once again explained the "chain of command" the Bible talks about.I'm not even sure what she means anyway. She has always cut me low & put me down for something. I still love her unconditionally. & helped her anytime she needed. Babysitting , money etc... The last time we talked, she said,"I don't need you!" Rejection from a 30 yr. old grown woman hurts. Thank God I have the Lord for mental stability. He is so Faithful.

If our self worth were based on our EC we would have none. We sure take a beating from them. Thankfully, we have our true value in the Lord who loves us.

As far as the commandments we may like to change them around to suit our purposes but they stand the way God meant them. He is in charge. God alone can change thei hearts of our rebellious EC.
