But I remember even when I was little telling her how much I appreciated the life she provided us. In addition, I've been forever grateful at how independent and self-reliant it made me. It made me strong.
So it's all in the perception of the child. A reasonable child CAN see the reality of it, and still appreciate what his/her mother does. And for all you know, from what I can tell from your post, your son may not even think this was a problem!
For many of us, we will never figure out the whys. Most of our guilt is misplaced. In any case, the working mother's guilt for having to work, in cases like yours, is . . . pure baloney! Take it from me and other children who appreciated all their hard-working mothers did for them.
