What Does It Really Mean to “Trust in God”?

If you’ve spent time around Christians, you’ve likely heard the phrase “trust in God.”


It’s an important phrase; Jesus tells us that the work of trusting in God is the only work he wants us to do. 


But in a practical sense, what does it really mean to “trust in God”? How do we ensure we’re not just repeating a religious idea but actually living it in our daily lives?


To find the answers to these questions, we took a deep dive into the verses in the Bible about trusting in God. One thing we learned is that the sheer volume of verses on this topic tells us that our trust in God matters a lot to him.
 





















 


God looks down from heaven on all people. He wants to see if there are any who understand. He wants to see if there are any who trust in God.

God is actively searching for people who will trust in him, so if we want to be close to him it’s important to regularly examine how that part of our relationship with him is going. Trust in God can’t be measured by the number of minutes you spend reading the Bible each day or the number of Christian activities you attend (though those are of course good things to do).


What we found in these passages of the Bible is that trusting in God is active. It brings power into our lives and compels us to move forward with faith as we believe in God’s promises instead of getting stuck in the past. Trust in God gives us a path out of discouragement and helps us stand strong in the face of difficulty, uncertainty, and fear.

Trusting in God means staying calm when attacked
 





















 

Even if an army attacks me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if war breaks out against me, I will still trust in God.

Though I’d like to think I’m strong and secure enough to face anything that comes my way, I’m more likely to crumble at the slightest difficulty (let alone an army attacking me). 


In life, fear is inevitable. We will all face attacks from hardship, uncertainty, conflict, and so much more beyond our control. Though we can’t always determine what happens in our lives, we can decide how we will respond, and what we will rely on not only to endure it but grow through it. 


God wants to be that strong foundation we rely on in the midst of fear. He wants to take care of us. I love these lyrics to the song  “I Got You” by Via Music because they remind me of God’s heart for us:

We don’t have to be afraid, because God’s got us.


But too often, I respond to my fear by trying to take control and figure out everything on my own, replacing the security that comes from trusting in God with the much less stable self-reliance.
 





















 

Trust GOD from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for GOD’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to GOD! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life! Honor GOD with everything you own; give him the first and the best. Your barns will burst, your wine vats will brim over. But don’t, dear friend, resent GOD’s discipline; don’t sulk under his loving correction. It’s the child he loves that GOD corrects; a father’s delight is behind all this.

When we give God the first and best of our time and energy, we can trust that he will take care of the rest. We don’t have to be afraid, because we can trust that listening for God’s voice in everything we do and everywhere we go will not only keep us on track but also bring blessings into our lives (our “barns will burst” and our “wine vats will brim over”). 


It is only when we rely on ourselves or things other than God that we become lost, weak, and insecure.


We know we’re trusting God when we surrender our lives to him, believing that he is always good and is in control no matter what attacks or circumstances come our way.


This trust shows itself in a heart that stays calm, which is not something we can force or muster up — it’s not the same as acting calm on the outside while panicking on the inside. A calm heart is one that genuinely trusts more in God’s goodness than what it sees outside.

i didnt read this? its all wonky. I practice trusting God by practicing "always giving thanks to God for all things" why? because its scripture and why? because God uses all things for our good so, we can thank him for all of it expecially the things we grieve over or dislike.

I also practice trust in God by practicing his word to love one another to humble ourselves to read the word and abide in it, and so many other ways. All my trust and hope is in him and anyone who has spent any time in prayer, with so much answered prayer, so much direction and correction from God, so much continual refining, and lol so much of witnessing God's power moving? I mean God is more real than this place we live, this world, this flesh any of this evil temporary place. It is as simple as trusting purity and love for our God is purity and our god is love and our God purifies all of us, by his grace in his abundant love for us.

so much about trust in scripture,

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5,6

Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the Lord. Psalm 4:5

Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. Psalm 9:10

but, i am far more interested in, what this trust looks like in practice.

I used to trust my own thinking, now i realize my thinking is corrupt and flawed, its better to trust God's word than my own thinking, unless my thinking? is God's word!!!

Iet the word transform our minds, "be transformed by the renewing of your minds then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is"

And what is God's will???

"God desires all to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth"

and how do we lead others or persuade them??? by preaching or telling them what to do? NO, by saying they are going to hell for their sins? NO, by separating ourselves from them because they are struggling with sin and burdens??? NO NO NO NO NO,

Our witness, is to serve them in love, right where they are, to pick up all their burdens with them not caring what they believe, but by carrying them with OUR FAITH, by comforting them with the comfort WE HAVE received from our GOD of all comfort. By sacrificing of ourselves and our time and our money and anyting it takes whatever they need for any person God puts in front of us in this life. We serve them in love, the same love our God revealed to us and empowers us to practice, and then, if they ask? we can be prepared to give them a reason for the hope we have.

draino, I couldn't easily copy and paste this article in such a way that is easier to read. So I am sorry about the inconvenience. I will try to do better next time which will take a lot of time and energy but this group sometimes sent me good articles. They seem to not want people to copy and paste easily somewhere else.

I think "trusting in God" can mean loving Him and obeying Him and believing that He has our best interests.

We trust God by believing His answers to our prayers are best and for our own good (and for others' good) even though the answers are not what we want. We trust Him to take care of the seeds of faith through His words and our words to others to grow. We are careful with how we conduct ourselves so we don't dishoner Him and cause people to think "If this is what God is like, I don't want to have anything to do with it." We want to live in such a way that people can see God in us and what we do. How we do that, is up to the individual and his/her experiences. We can turn people away by constantly throwing the Bible at them. We have to know how to communicate through other persons' language without throwing Bible verses at them all the time. Some people can see God in another person by the fruits of the Holy Spirit in the person.

My daughter just recently told me "If you stop being so angry all the time and talking angry, you will be a happier person." I realized then how angry and bitter I have been for a long time, and I started to try to talk and think more calmly. I was able to do it for a short time, then my bad moods started again last night when I was trying to communicate with the cable company who would not let me communicate with a human which could be because it was late and there were not many humans there for me to talk to. I went in circles trying to get them to get me an operator and ended up cussing and yelling at their machine which was the first time it ever happened in my experience of talking with machines. I was glad I didn't do that to a human. I have the feeling that the steroid medication the orthopedic doctor gave me for my pain in the shoulder and arm causes a lot of stress to my brain and body.

Trusting in God can also mean not questioning Him about what is happening in the human world and believing in His good intentions and respecting His sovereignty. It is our way of saying "Yes, you are the boss, and I believe you are a good boss and God."

It is God's plan and will that humans return to the initial good relationship with him so He wants us believers to speak for Him. He gives every human free will to choose to return to Him or not under His condition. We share His words with others so they will know who He is and what he wants from humans who he created. He definitely didn't create humans so they will turn against Him and hate Him. Faith comes through hearing the words of God, so that is why we when having the chance want to show God's words to others so others will hear God and come to His salvation. I don't talk about the Bible with people I run into or people who I know who don't talk about it. I, however, believe I should help God's work by showing Bible verses where I can show and let the verses speak to them. The rest is up to God. I help sow the seeds in the way I know how and let God make them grow.
