The Spirit of Wonder
by Russ Ewell
How do I keep my sense of awe as I navigate the challenges of life?
Wonder is defined in the Collins dictionary as a “feeling of great surprise and pleasure that you have, for example, when you see something that is very beautiful, or when something happens that you thought was impossible.”
The spirit of wonder is the heartbeat of our walk with God. It’s one of the things that made David such an extraordinary man in the history of God’s people. His relationship with God was infused with feelings of great pleasure, admiration for the beauty of God’s creation, and faith in the impossible. David’s wonder led him to walk in step with God, as described in Acts 13:
“I’ve searched the land and found this David, son of Jesse. He’s a man whose heart beats to my heart, a man who will do what I tell him.”
Acts 13:20-22 MSG
Wonder is not merely a fleeting emotion but a deep and transformative awe that reshapes how we see God, ourselves, and the world around us. When we live in wonder, our faith becomes transcendent, resulting in an insuppressible hope, an overflowing gratitude, and a mountain-moving faith that changes our lives and the lives of all with whom we have contact.
When all the people saw Jesus, they were filled with wonder. And they ran to greet him.
Mark 9:15 NIrV
This spiritual family changes the world because all who choose to belong to the family of God tear down the walls of distance. Where we would otherwise call each other strangers in distrust, through faith in God’s parenthood we call each other family.
The defining experience of encountering Jesus is wonder. When the crowds around Jesus saw him, they didn’t hesitate—they ran toward him, overwhelmed by awe. This is the response that Jesus inspires. His presence is transformative, his power is unmatched, and his love is immeasurable. Yet how often do we lose sight of this wonder as we navigate the routines and challenges of life? How often does our vibrant faith slip into mere religious ritual, leaving wonder to fade into weariness and burnout?

According to His riches in glory refers to a biblical promise found in Philippians 4:19, which states that God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. This verse emphasizes God's provision and generosity towards believers.

Like little children when they see something for the first time....they get excited and say 'do it again ' Daddy.
Our heavenly Father wants us to trust so fully in Him like little children calling out to Him "do it again Daddy"
Something that caught my attention in this devotional is the following paragraph:
"This spiritual family changes the world because all who choose to belong to the family of God tear down the walls of distance. Where we would otherwise call each other strangers in distrust, through faith in God’s parenthood we call each other family."
I think Christians feel connected to other believers through the words in the Bible. In DS it is difficult for many members to build closeness and trust for many reasons but in Chrisitan groups, we can definitely or hopefully feel the sense of being part of God's family to some extent.
By the way, I rescheduled the refrigerator delivery date to January 23. I am moving very slowly in the path clearing since my body is refusing to go the faster speed. Thirteen days straight of trying to beat the dateline knocked me out. Lowe's told me it is okay if I need to reschedule it again after January 23 but they prefer not to hold the refrigerator longer than three months. I am glad they will hold it that long but I should be able to get the house ready by January 23. My daughter has lost hope of me getting us a new refrigerator. Our old refrigerator broke about six months ago. The problem is our old refrigerator can't get out, and a new one can't get in. What I am doing now is getting things out of the way. We have been using two mini-refrigerators.
I pray everyone has a nice weekend and a Happy New Year.
My church family is actually closer to me than my biological parents and sister.
I believe God gave me my church mom, big brother and sisters to help me heal from the trauma I experienced as a young child in such a disfunctional family.
I'm so glad Lowe's was able to push back the delivery date for you, to give you more time. You don't want to push yourself too hard, risking injury.
Blessings and hugs
God's words give us positive thinking and hope and strength. I don't read the Bible often as I used to but whenever I did, I felt God often spoke to me. I am on disability and took care of my husband and daughter who are on disability so it has been a hard life. You are right it is good that I take a break from clearing the path in the house for the refrigerator. It was a miracle I could make the progress I made during the thirteen days. Right now I am picking up a few items slowly a little bit at a time.
I pray for God's strength and healing for you and for myself too. I have hope that God will renew my strength soon. I pray He will heal you from all your health issues and anxiety and depression and bless you and everyone in your family with good new experiences and joy the rest of this year and new year and every year after.
