Did Judas go to heaven?

"Did Judas repent and go to heaven?"

From what we can see in Scripture, it does not appear that Judas went to heaven, even though it says he repented of what he had done (Matthew 27:1-10). The reason I say this is because of what Jesus said about him.



  • Matthew 26:24, “The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”  

  • Mark 14:21, “For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.“


So, if Judas repented and thereby went to heaven, then why would Jesus have said it had been good if the man had never been born? It would not make sense. but we must conclude that he did not go to heaven.  Furthermore, we find that Judas was possessed by Satan.



  • John 6:70, “Jesus answered them, ‘Did I Myself not choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is a devil?‘ 71 Now He meant Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray Him.”

  • John 13:26–27, “Jesus then answered, “That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him.” So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”


From the Scriptures above we see that Jesus called Judas a devil and John the apostle reveals that Satan entered into him. It was then that he went out and betrayed Christ. This means that Judas was in an extremely bad spiritual condition.


Judas felt remorse for betraying Christ


So, we must conclude that though Judas felt sorrow for his betrayal of Jesus, he never believed who Christ really was. We know this from the words as Jesus as well.


John 6:64-65, “But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me, unless it has been granted him from the Father.”


Conclusion


In light of the Scriptures, we must conclude that Judas was never a true believer in Christ (John 6:64), that he was possessed by Satan (John 13:27), and though he regretted his betrayal of Jesus, the Lord said that it would have been better if he had never been born (Matthew 26:24; Mark 14:21).  Therefore, we conclude that Judas ended up going to hell.

So, I think this article was interesting. It prompted me to do a lot of reading to figure out whether Jesus' use of that one phrase necessarily meant that Judas was doomed eternally (it turns out all, or all but 1, people I read do think it means that.

I also read to try to figure out the difference between Judas and all the others who failed, abandoned, or called for the death of Jesus

It was interesting reading.

I don't remember "where Judas went after his death" was mentioned in any sermons preached by preachers in Protestant churches. I stumbled into this subject after reading the first chapter of the Book of Acts the other day. I was surprised to read (in Acts 1:18) that he "fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out." I then found another article that explains why Judas hanging himself and the condition of his intestines spilled out could relate to each other.
