There are different types of Bible study. Like Sunday school lessons , group studies, on line studies, correspondence, etc. one on one study with God. Just meditation in the word and mysteries is what I enjoy. Is there a wrong or right way? I recall him teaching us how to pray, and that is "Our Father...) Before reading the word. I pray for wisdom and understanding, then just read. Running reference on something that captures you as your reading is great. Have received blessing unspeakable and full of glory. As I am meditating on this type. The song comes too mind " In the Garden" one of my favorites.The words are above and beyond :) Just saying:)

I use a women's study bible. It kind of guides you.

I am studying in Seminary, so access to all kinds of books. But I also do a daily reading with an ESV study Bible. I read the comments especially when things are confusing.

I think reading the Bible straight through is the best way to go. Not saying that other people don't have good things to say, but just reading the Bible and listening to God's instructions seems like the best way to go.

I am new at reading the bible, but read somewhere to start with the New Testament and read it through, then read the OT. Thats what I'm doing. My goal is to finish by the end of this year. I just started at the beginning of January and have gotten through Romans.

Good for you angeljulianne. I hope you have a modern version, I find them easier to read. Romans can be tough, but it really is one of the best books in the Bible.

Another thing I was thinking is that I always underline the parts that stand out for me. Sometimes it is different than the previous time, but God always shows me something new. And I am working on finding one special verse and meditating on it all day long. My pastor taught me that - another something new.

Jane, I'm in the narratives of the Old Testament, and they are riveting stories. True stories, but so interesting. Of course, there are spiritual lessons to be learned from each story, and sometimes reading the entire book in one sitting, gives you an entirely different perspective. When I took Old and Late New Testament studies, one of the requirements was to read each book in one sitting. Plus we went through the books quite quickly.

My general feeling after that, was that the Bible really was a story of the failures of God's chosen ones - Israel and later, a lot of the church, but God's saving grace and restoration. A very important lesson we should never forget - God does have consequences for disobedience, although we can also confess our sins and the Lord is faithful to forgive us.

I like topical studies. I keep in mind that this can be a way to support what I like or what I already believe. But everything is that way, like where we gather, and what we pray about. So knowing the risks, I treat the word of God as though it was a sword to sharpen, or a tool to use for specific uses. That seems to work well along with verse by verse, book by book bible study in a group.

I think we all do this to a degree when we use the New Testament more than the Old, and when we remember certain principles and specific verses more than other ones. The other way, like a reading schedule, seems mechanical to me. But if you ever want to be sure you have read the entire bible, you have to make yourself (or let yourself!) read and listen to all of it.

I may be tempted to choose a way to support what I like or what I already believe. But really everything is that way, like where we gather for church and what we pray about. I'm in the process of reading the bible from start to finish. I've read a lot of the bible but never in any sort of order. I am up to Exodus now but I miss reading from the New Testament.
