Waiting on Biopsy Results

I am 29 years old and I just had a colposcopy last Tuesday. The Dr. said I had a "substancial lesion that encircled the cervical opening" and took three biopsys. Now I am anxiously waiting the 7th to get my results. and I have no idea what to expect. Is there any chance it could come back as nothing?

I'm going to be having my second biopsy soon, I have the procedure where they freeze off the precancerous cells, but this did nothing according to the doctor. She said something must be wrong with my immune system since it isn't fighting off HPV. I'm scared that this same process will happen again, has anyone had more than two cervical biopsies done?

Hi, wellness21. It's not uncommon for people to have more than two colposcopy biopsies done. Some people who have ongoing problems with hpv have them done pretty regularly. I've had four or five.

It's true that people with immune system issues often have more trouble with hpv, but there are also people who are perfectly healthy and their immune system functions just fine, but they still have trouble. We don't know why this is the case. Do you have any other health problems, or are you taking any medications?

Depending on how your next colposcopy comes back, you'll have a better idea about next steps. I always recommend that you ask for a copy of your medical record, including any pap results or pathology reports. That can help you read for yourself and learn more about what's going on. It's also handy if you should want to seek a second opinion or find a new doctor.

Freezing off abnormal cells (cryotherapy) can be very effective, but it doesn't always work. There are other ways to remove abnormal cells also, but it would depend on your next test results to know which one makes the most sense for you.
