ISSCR Launches Web Site Providing Information on Stem Cell Treatments
A Closer Look at Stem Cell Treatments: www.CloserLookAtStemCells.org
Today, the International Society for Stem Cell Research launched "A Closer Look at Stem Cell Treatments" (http://www.closerlookatstemcells.org/), a Web site to arm patients, their families and doctors with information they need to make decisions about stem cell treatments. This extensive endeavor, in alignment with the ISSCR mission, was developed by the ISSCR Task Force on Unproven Stem Cell Treatments over concern that stem cell treatments are being marketed to patients worldwide for a variety of medical conditions, without having mechanisms in place to promote safety or likely benefit.
The site will provide resources that explain fundamental scientific principles of stem cell biology and their implications for stem cell treatments, outline the widely accepted process of clinical translation, and provide questions that a patient and/or caregiver should ask purveyors of asserted stem cell treatments to aid them in making treatment decisions.
The Task Force also recommended a new resource for patients to submit requests to review specific clinics that claim to offer stem cell treatments. The ISSCR will ask the clinic to provide evidence that appropriate oversight and other patient protections are in place for the treatments they offer. The ISSCR will publish online whether these clinics provide the evidence requested.
