Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...

I am just wondering, how many here have sun allergy?
This is going into the sun and coming out in hives and welts, that drive you crazy with itch and last for a number of weeks. I have accidentally discovered that this could be related to my celiac, and was wondering if others have this same problem?
Doctors told me they don't know why this happens..
and they hadn't seen it before.
Well the other day it happened again , and I thought I would investigate it on the net....
And was astounded to learn it happens
I have had this reaction to the sun for approx 27 years, and have only just discovered why it happens. And yet this is another pointer as far as I am concerned that would have shown doctors that something was wrong......
what I discovered...
though this is very rare. In sensitive people, direct sun exposure can trigger an immune system response that activates inflammatory cells or proteins in the skin. The result may be an itchy, red rash or hives
And this
(su) develop hives after exposure to visible and/or uv radiation that is found in sunlight - not heat itself!
In people who have su, something triggers a change in their blood at some point in their life. This is perhaps due to an antigen/antibody reaction, perhaps due to something they came into contact with that their body didnt like, perhaps due to stress.... Etc, etc... Perhaps, perhaps perhaps!! Nobody knows why this happens! Their bloods cells are no longer "normal". The cells themselves may be different in some way or they may now contain some kind of unknown compound or chemical which developed spontaneously. But no one nows exactly what is different about it either.
This change in their blood then manifests itself when the person is exposed to the sun's light. Visible and/or uv light, when it is exposed to an su sufferer's skin, triggers an allergic reaction as their blood (containing the su unknown chemical) thinks that the sun's light is a foreign invader. This then triggers the body's natural allergic reaction - the release of histamine and other things, eventually causing the hives/rash on the sun-exposed skin.
and then this
The Calcium Back-Up Systems Sunlight on your skin also results in the production of inositol triphosphate, INSP-3, which regulates the extraction of calcium stored in cells. When not enough calcium is consumed, then INSP-3 is triggered to supply the cell with calcium from elsewhere in the body. If insufficient calcium is stored within cells, then the parathyroid hormone, stimulated by the deficiency of vitamin D, induces the extraction of calcium from the bones. Finally, if the calcium deficiency continues, over time the bones may become severely depleted by continual extraction of their calcium. Then, as a last resort, the body begins to extract calcium from proteins that regulate key cell functions. This, in turn, can lead to poor cell function. The real solution is to get enough high quality, natural vitamin D. If not enough vitamin D is available at the cell, the body can become calcium deficient over time In healthy people, regular sunlight exposure stimulates the production of many immune-boosting compounds. However, for those with a nutrient-deficient diet, regular sunlight exposure may be hazardous and can create free radical damage.
Dr. Zane Kime, a brilliant medical doctor and researcher, points out in his excellent book, Sunlight, that sunlight is very healthy for the skin and whole body metabolism when the body is nourished by sufficient nutrients. However, when hydrogenated oils and other toxic nutrients are consumed, the skin becomes imbalanced and sunlight exposure can produce toxic skin reactions
So I am wondering if anyone else has this sun allergy?............it's clear that it is caused by D deficiency, and again the hives etc, are a sign that the body hasn't enough nutrients, and is causing the body to react and fight what it believes the invader (The sun)
I do believe this all relates to celiac...if the body had nutrients that the body could call on to produce vitamin D from the sun... then the hives and welts wouldn't happen.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
I just found it so amazing how everything seems to be linked, every ailment that seems to present itself seems to be able to be tracked back to gluten and the auto immune system.
I learn more and more each day.....
I have also developed food allergies (shellfish, peanuts, sunflower seeds, wheat/gluten and dairy) within the last year.
The strange cold allergy and the sudden onset of these food allergies/intolerances got me thinking about a connection with my overactive immune system and my digestive system. Myself and my naturopath strongly suspect a condition commonly known as "Leaky Gut" or Intestinal Permeability. Basically the walls of your intestine are weakened and allow the larger chain proteins of your foods to pass through. Normally your food is broken down to small chain proteins before passing through your intestine to your bloodstream. Because these larger chain proteins aren't supposed to be in your bloodstream, your body recognizes them as toxins and starts to create anti bodies... which could eventually lead to an allergic reaction which is what happened to me.
Not saying all food allergies or celiac disease is a result of this condition but I believe it's the link I was missing. Focusing now on healing my digestive tract and a rotation diet careful not to sensitize myself to anything else!
Chances are that you are experiencing problems from nutritional imbalances that would allow your body to deal with sun damage without the symptoms that you describe.
I find the term allergy makes my life hell!! People who think I am "allergic" also think "a little bit won't hurt". I also hear things like, "So do you go into anaphylaxis (sp) or what?"
Add to this the fact that Celiac's who continue to consume even trace amounts of gluten are at greater risk of several difficult to treat cancers!
That is why I find the "allergy" term so offensive.
Being unfamiliar with the sun problem, I had no idea it was not an allerfy.
But I am really wondering why we "dumb" down life threating illness for people who don't seem to give a flying fig about others.
maybe I just run into rude ignorant people, I do not know.
A nurse the other day told me that I just like the attention from demanding that I get special food all the time. It starts to get to me sometimes.
How do you get enough vit D if you can not spend time in the sun???
I have a serious vit D deficency and have to spend at least 30 minutes in the sun every day.
Again, in my case, I don't know that I've seen a connection between the two things. I've had the sun allergy all my life, and while I always had a sensitive stomach I did not start to exhibit signs of celiac until after I got mononucleosis (another autoimmune disease, though triggered by virus!)
I do understand the frustration of ignorant people. I think we all have our fair share of them. I guess I try to focus on those good people who do their best to be understanding and accommodate. But I too have been treated as if I just like to be problematic in needing a special diet. It was bad enough when I couldn't eat gluten, now I have to be careful how much vitamin K I eat too, so it's all complicated beyond belief. I guess I just try to remember that if I weren't in my situation it's likely I wouldn't fully understand it either. People say dumb things to me and make dumb suggestions to me all the time, and for a long time I would try to educate and correct them. Eventually I just realized that all was doing by that was frustrating myself. Yes, their comments were dumb, but it was often well-meant. So I've learned to just thank them for their suggestions, knowing full well that I have no intention of using them. I still bristle sometimes, but overall I find my life easier to deal with by reacting that way.
FEVERS- low grade fevers. Also other flu like symptoms- its to the point I cant work or get out of bed most of the summer. I am dairy and grain and soy free and do not eat much protein in the summer as this makes it worse.
I get no rash though. Some of my celiac friends claim the sun and heat makes them nauseous and many get rashes. I will try the vitamin D and calcium. Any other suggestions? I am determined to get through this summer healthy!
Get used to people thinking it's NO Big deal because they have NO IDEA what it does to us.
How many have Non alocholic Fatty liver disease/IBD, Crohns, etc etc because of CD? There is so much connected to this disease and more research is needed to connect the dots.
Just a thought
