Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...
I live in the same area as you do, if you need other doctor's to see, let me know. Your son does sound like it is maybe another food in his diet that is causing the problem, from what I understand and have been told, take away one food and a secondary one may show up. In other words, his body was dealing with Celiac and now that that has calmed down, it is trying to fight other food allergies, sounds confusing, but it makes sense. Also, has he been tested for other things? Keep us posted, Good Luck, Donna21
He had a full work up with a great doctor. She did a physical exam and a rectal (which was hard for him). She thinks the recent illness was a rotovirus given the color of stool.
I have to do four stool samples over the next few days. He had an xray done to make sure that stool wasn't backing up and in his abdomen to make sure that wasn't causing any leaking. The doctor said that some celiacs when they have leaking that it is caused by blockage from not being able to pass stool. I didn't know that.
She did a full blood workup and is checking his thyroid as well. Doing blook work to check liver enzymes and for any inflammation. She said she would prefer to do the blood work when he is not gluten free but I can't do that as he would get too sick.
I also have to go back to have a lactaid breath test done to check for an intolerance of lactose.
We got through it pretty well and I am glad that we got in so quicly and had such a thorough work up. The doctor said that if any of the blood work was elevated she wants to do a scope.
Also set up an appointment with a nutrionist as well. Very thorough doctor and I am relieved that some better answers may be coming.
I don't think it changes how we are managing the diet except that I have to be stricter about following it.
Thanks for all the support!
