Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...

I have requested a blood test for celiacs- no doubt really in my mind I have it. I just know I can't eat gluten for a time now!!!
Anyway I haven't eaten much gluten- had a bit of jelly last night though so..
do you think the tests will be adequately reliable?

The only thing a blood test will show is your gluten level. My husband was diagnoised with a blood test and it was acurate.

If you want any test for gluten to be reliable and accurate then you need to continue eating your normal diet. If you have already started a gluten-free diet your test results may not be accurate and you possibly come back as negative for Celiac Sprue. The same goes for any intestinal biopsies. You must remain on a diet that contains gluten until all testing has been complete.

By the way, I was also positively diagnosed with a blood test and a biopsy.

My antobodies were negative but the biosy was positive for celiac. I feel a lot better with a gluten free diet.

I was diagnosed first with DH with a skin biopsy which is CD. I went GF immediately (not totally because I had alot to learn about it yet). I was told by CSA to eat lots of Grape Nut cereal before the Endo. My blood work and intestinal biopsy all came back positive. If you read Dr. Greens's book he tell you that even if your biopsy come back negative, it doesn't mean your are not Celiac. It just means it is not active at that time or they didn't biopsy a part of the intestine that was damaged. Good luck.Try to read his book "Celiac Disease"-A Hidden Epidemic.

When my MD finally agreed to the blood test I had already stopped eating gluten and it came back negative. However, everytime I eat something with gluten in it all the symptoms come back. My GI doc said that neither a blood test or biopsy will be positive if you are maintaining a gluten free diet. Good luck!

There are tests you can do without eating gluten that are very accurate. Entero Labs and a couple of others - can't remember names - have cheek swab tests for the DNA markers for gluten problems. These are accurate even with no symptoms whatsoever! There are too many people with CD that had false negatives on their blood tests and even biopsy's. But your DNA never changes! Also, Entero Labs have tests that can check how you're doing on a GF diet, and if there are any other problems with the gut/diet. It is a one time stool test you collect easily in the privacy of your home and send it back to the lab. Dr. Fine, who runs it, has been a gastro specializing in bowel disease/problems for 30 years or so! Their accuracy rate is quite high compared to other testing I've seen. It's worth checking out! www.enterolab.com

My son had the blood test in April 2007 and his score was 115. After eating gluten free since May 2007 he had the blood test again this last month and had a score of 5. My other son and I had the test done and our results were 1. I was led to believe the blood test is the count of antibodies which attack gluten. If you are a celiac, then the number is high because your body is fighting the gluten. If it is low and you HAVE been eating gluten then you are not a celiac. You have to be eating gluten to get an accurate reading on the blood. Anyone who is Gluten Free will pass the blood test whether you have celiac or not!
