Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...
I'm glad that your immediate family is supportive, even though your extended family doesn't fully understand. There are others on this forum with similar family issues. I'm blessed, because my family and friends try to be supportive. However, they don't all understand how deadly gluten can be, or the harm that even one exposure can cause, or even understand what contains gluten. Thanks for introducing yourself, and best wishes to you.
