Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...
First of all I would push really hard to get this test over so you can get off gluten again. Your GI says you should feel better right away, I didn't. It takes 6-9 months for your intestines to heal. It took several months for my migraines to get better, gluten was my biggest trigger. Having such severe IBS you probably are having absorption problems and should have your vitamin D and vitamin B levels checked. Mine were terrible after years of diahrea. My GI ran those blood tests. It's believed now that gluten attacks your thyroid. Once I was off gluten for over a year I started to take less thyroid meds. My numbers got better every 3 months and we kept lowering how much Synthroid I was taking. For the IBS-D my GI doctor put me on Creon enzymes and a really high quality probiotics to get the flora back in my intestines. I also drink Kombucha tea a couple of times a week, it has probiotics, digestive enzymes and is fermented which is good for your stomach. I drank them everyday for the first 12-14 months. That took almost a year to get the flora back. I finally found that one of my drugs was causing most of my IBS-D and stopped taking that. I was in diapers some days. Now only stress or being glutened will start the IBS. You might want to start a food diary and see if there is something that you can identify that makes it worse. I also got Lomotil for the diahrea instead of Immodium. It's a prescription drug and really works. I would ask for that until you start to feel better. Your intestines probably have a lot of inflammation, that takes a long time to correct. You might want to post this on the IBS site. A lot of good information there.
I was a wreck emotionally, always afraid I would have an accident in public. Having intestinal problems are awful. People don't realize how hard it is on you. It took me over a year to feel better, it wasn't right away. But if you just keep at it, over time I think you can feel better and keep up with your kids.
Really sorry you've been through so much.
Sending good thoughts and hope you are feeling better soon. I got this quote from someone yesterday, it helped me put my problem in perspective.

"Note to Self - I am doing the best I can with what I have, in this moment ---- And that is all I can expect of anyone, including me."
As Lynn mentioned, it can take a long time for the intestines to heal. I've heard between 6 and 12 months. Plus, there can be other grains that trigger problems. For instance, corn bothers me sometimes. I have two friends who must also avoid soy and gluten, and one friend who must stay away from dairy, gluten, and canola oil. You might have more than one trigger. In fact, some people must eat a completely grain-free diet. I'm posting a link to Dr. Peter Osborne's video about gluten that is very informative. It's about 30 mins. long, but is well worth watching.

BTW, if you are concerned about what to eat on a GF diet, join Pinterest. I have found thousands of recipes (no exaggeration). Best wishes to you.
22Lynn, I totally know how you feel! I've also thought about diapers sometimes when it's horrible. It's so embarrassing, my family has finally adjusted to my issues but still it's such an inconvenience.
I don't get why people like us have to live this way. It's ridiculous!
