Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...
If the restaurant is a chain, most chain restaurants have an allergen menu online. So be sure to check the allergen menu for their gluten-free options before you go. If the restaurant is a "mom-and-pop" type of restaurant, talk to someone at the restaurant before ordering. There used to be a restaurant in my town that had a family member with celiac, so anytime I went in, they really worked hard to make sure my food wasn't cross-contaminated. Some restaurants will work with you, especially if they understand celiac disease.
I would recommend going to a gluten free fair! they are really fun and give great suggestions on places to eat and products to buy (plus free food!!) I live in southern California and we have a couple a year.
I would also find that one restraint. I have a "big chain" restraint that I have never gotten sick from at that location. When ever I need to eat out with family or friends we always go there. Yes it can get a little old, but there are A LOT more options for them than their are for you. So never feel bad! good luck!
