He went to his doctor yesterday. His doctor informed him he was an addict and in fact, the doctor could call the cops and have my dad arrested for taking my mom's pills and he would detox in lock-up. Instead, he gave my dad the option of doing detox in a facility on his own. However, it needs to be approved by a shrink and the medical plan they have there was supposedly only one shrink available and now my dad has to wait a month to get in to see the guy. So...the doctor put him on morphine 12 hour time release capsules.
The dose is much smaller than the 9 pills he was taking, so the morphine is not working and it is sick as a dog.
I don't know what will happen. However, I do wonder what would have happened if the doctor had listened to me months ago when I told him my dad was addicted and he wasn't taking 9 pills a day?
I don't know what will happen; however, they sent a social worker/therapist here a few days ago and I told her I'm done. No longer do I want addicts in my life and I have back off. She tried to get my mother to let go and realize that the man she is dealing with is no longer her husband...my dad's only love is a vicodin or percocet.
My dad accused me of wanting him put some where and I admitted that if he can't do what hew should here at home or is stealing drugs, he needs to go somewhere that they can take care of him. It's not easy or fair for us to be watching him 24/7 and he still gets the pills. And yells that we are watching him.
I saw another post where a woman made a promise to her dad. A friend of mine to me to NEVER promise my parents I would NOT put them in a home. And I am ready for that any minute.
Of course, I have additional medical problems where i can't take care of them. And in fact, they are healthier than me.

Situations change. We can NOT take care of our parents to the detriment of our own health. And when our parents situation change that is also grounds for "changing the deal".
Your father's addiction to pain pills is a deal changer. He will not see it that way, but the important thing is that you need to see it that way. You may not ever get your father to see it that way, so don't make that part of your "feeling OK with it" logic.
