I am sorry that your mother's complaining is getting you down. I do know from my personal experience that the amount of light in the environment changes my ability to see things. I don't know if there is a universal scale of brightness, but as I've gotten older I need a higher amount of light to see things that I could easily see in less light in the past.

Perhaps your mother has some of that going on?

Ann, it could be too that she just likes to hear herself complain and she's looking for attention. Does her Opthalmologist have her taking any vitamins or does this person have her on a diet program? At the very least, she shouldn't be out driving in a car without sunglasses, and I mean a prescription pair. Her blood pressure, cholesterol both have an effect on her eyesight also. If she hasn't seen this doctor recently, maybe you could give their office a call?

the blind association and friends have brought over spocial lights that are much brighter but she wont use them or says it doenst help. her 2 eye doctors have been watching her for some time, the one eye was not diagnosed properly in the beggininng so it was to late for the shots for the wet macular. her good eye was determined to have dry macular, which is a much slower progressing blindness, but it has been on a whirlwind downhill. she does take special eye drops and she hasnr driven for 3 years due to her extreme anxiety, she actually shouldn't of been driving even before that. she has gotten her yearly physical and all is fine. she just wants to bitch, whine, cry and make one feel guilty. I know it must be very hard to be losing ones sight but she is doing nothing to help herself or taking advantage of the many programs just the town provides, losingbattle. thanks for the suggestions, I will need luck tonight as my patience is very thin over other issues and I don't feel real good, I hope I can gkeep myself in check!

Oh wow! My Mom went through almost exactly the same thing your mom is going through!

Wet in one eye. Dry in the other. She found many ways to compensate and did remarkably well navigating around the house and taking care of herself. She had a big reading machine and kept writing to her friends.

It progressed very slowly.

Sometimes she could see better than others. Sometimes she was all crying and screaming that she could not see anything. Other times she could see things just fine out of the corner of her "good" eye.

At times I felt she was just getting in a hurry and not paying attention. Others I definitely felt she was trolling for sympathy.

Pepper is right about the light thing. Keeping things brightly lit can be a big help.

how did you keep your sanity? my mother wont try any of the things given to her, she assumes she cant see with them anyways. last night I had her try and read with her magnifier the list of programs on this special radio she said she couldn't see it, I asked her if she had tried, no not really, and she read the whole weeks worth of listings. she simply will not take advantage of things given her, so frustrating

Keep my sanity? I'm pretty sure I slipped in and out. I just kept setting limits on her behavior until she realized everybody would be happier including HERSELF if she stopped the histrionics .

Maybe after a while tell her you will do something she wants if she will try one of her gadgets.

Then if she refuses say ok mom. Bye and leave

Oh and make her try it in front of you to make sure it happened!:).
