Whether you have just started caring for your parents or just need a place to talk, we're here.
Hello everyone. I have not posted in this group very much since my parents passed and we settled their estate. It was a long and extremely stressful process that took a very long time.
I would like to share some of my experiences in the hope I can be helpful to those of you who are still going through it.
I was an only child. My parents were very verbally and emotionally abusive. I both loved and hated them at times. Nothing I ever did or said was never good enough.
however I believed it to be important to make their later years more palatable.
over a period of about ten years or more I persuaded them to get rid of some of their stuff and let us know the truth about their finances. Darn good thing we did. They were not nearly as fiscally astute as they thought they were and were about to make some terrible decisions.
of course they resisted like hell...... but it had to be done or we all would have lost everything.
please don't be afraid to ask the hard questions it's NOT disrespectful.
anyway it feels good to be back here. Please lmk if I can be helpful. Or have questions for me. Good luck with a difficult/rewarding journey.

Hello- I am new to the group
-
My therapist really knocked some sense into me last Friday about my spending. She said that there are needs and there are wants. She said that there is always going to be cheap stuff to buy, but do I need it? The answer is mostly "no". So today, I am taking back some things that I bought online at Kohl's, namely a 9 x 12 rug and a quilt for my bed. I also bought sheets that I don't need...
Good that you are healing and recovering from the estate settlement process.
But with the help of one of his cousins and a lawyer friend of his we were able to convince him to give SOMEONE power of attorney. He resisted of course but eventually.
Thanks to my husband and another good lawyer we were able to rescue their finances . We spent 14K on a lawyer to save us all about 400 k. There was enough for their care and we had a nice inheritance for our trouble. And believe you me we earned every cent of it.
They were able to spend their last days in a very nice assisted living place with all of their needs met.
We get an urgent call from my mom seeking to confirm my son is in jail I laugh and say mom this is a common fraud don't give them any money. She insists he called, I say no, and we have to get him out of an important business meeting on an emergency basis to confirm he's not in jail.
Grandparents should be instructed never to send more than 500 by wire or other means. Credit cards are safer and provide some protection against fraud.
