Caring For Aging Parents Support Group
Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Whether you have just started caring for your parents or just need a place to talk, we're here.
Medical Need
Medical need and method of payment play a large part in admission. A medical assessment must be performed before you can be admitted to a nursing home. ***This assessment is done by a registered nurse, who has been certified to perform the assessment.*** The assessment is a two-step process and is specifically designed by the State Health Department to evaluate your functional status as well as your appropriateness for a nursing home. The Department of Health requires that assessment forms be completed for everyone who applies for residence in a nursing home in New York State. The forms are valid for 30 days for hospitalized individuals and 90 days for those who are in any other setting, including their home.

This is the NYS guide to nursing home care. Copy and paste it to your browser. The nursing home may be the appropriate care level for your mom but within that there are levels. Just because they have a bed doesn't mean it's the appropriate place for her to be. She might be getting too much care which is restricting her or too little which is a risk.
What assisted living will and will not accept depends on more than just an eval.
When we were looking a t assisted living for Dad there were a lot of "rules" that if dad was not able to do certain things for himself he could be kicked up to skilled care.
I ALSO found out it kind of depends on how much they LIKE you too!
Staff and rules can be exasperating and I don't mean to say not to stand up for yourself... Just giving good advice to the wise here. Try hard to get along with staff and not be a pain in the A%$
I agree they should have told you they did not talk to your Mom, but that's just the way it is done at times. They will ask the staff and look at the chart.
From what I hear about your Mom I would prolly have evaluated your Mom for skilled care.
But my Dad has broken some of the rules and they are still keeping him! Those in charge can change the rules any time and there is not much you can do about it.
You catch more flies with honey that vinegar. I only squeak up when something is REALLY important and I am not saying you squeak too much. Just sayin'!
So, today I got a message from the Director Of Admissions at the Assisted Living Home, apologizing, that my mother and I were not informed that AJ was there, but spoke with the Therapist , and the social worker. She said he was supposed to meet with my Mom.
So, she encouraged me to call her, but I don' think there is anything I can do. She told me yesterday, that she has to wear a diaper all the time, and that may be right there, reason for her NOT to qualify for the Assisted Living, as they only have a nurse on duty for 16 hours per day.
So, for now she will be moved into her new room, after it's painted and ready.
In the meantime, My mom wants me to ck and see if having a Home health aide, or a companion to come here, and see if it's cheaper.
Hope you all are having a good night, and thanks for all of your comments.
Boo
But there are times I may be alone to take care of her because I live here. I am lucky not to be by myself in this.
Thinking of your being at home with Mom I am wondering how things will be since you have spinal issues and will have some surgery soon. If she falls you can always call 911 to help get her up but other tugging and steadying may prove to be a lot of effort from you.
If Mom has some money put back then you can prob figure a way to hire a student (Syracuse) ? You might be surprised what work study situation could do to help you. Just brain storming. As you see, it is kind of my plan for my Mom (hope)
