An "early" good morning to you all! I haven't gone to sleep yet...
SO, Mom is in a nursing home for rehab. She's been there about 5 weeks now. She is doing occupational and physical therapy.
Since she's been there, she has fallen 3 times. A few times, trying to get up and walk by herself, she fell....One other time, the nurse was helping her, and lost her grip, and mom slid down to floor.
Last night, she tried to get into her wheelchair from her bed, and she fell. The nurse walked by her room, and saw her, and went in and said "Hi, what happened, are you ok??
Mom said yes, I just tried to get up into the wheelchair, and I slid to the floor....and fell. Just help me up, but please don't call my daughter...Let's just keep this quiet, and make a deal, and we'll forget about the whole thing, ok?????
LOL!!! MY mom...she's quite a trip...She's making "deals" with the nurses, trying to keep it on the down low, about her falling so I don't call her and tell her, or say "MOM WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!"
I don't want to make light of this, but have to laugh, imagining my Mom, making a "deal" with the nurses. I'm surprised she didn't bribe them with her candy or cookies that my cousin brought her!!
BUt, I also don't want her to think i'm "scolding" her, but she was in the hospital for 5 months, before she went to rehab.
The last thing she needs, is to fall, and break a hip or arm, or leg, and she 'll be right back in the hospital, and all the hard work, and pain, and exhaustion she is going thru now for rehab, will be wiped clean...and she'll have to start all over.
I told her that today, didn't yell, and just told her. I never yell at her, just try to make it known to her=that she can't just get up and walk yet...She's not strong enough and her balance is not good.
She fell at home here, and her balance was not good. it's even worse now.
PHEW!!! Just feels good to get all of this out. My brother is out west, and is not local, so it's all on me, and he just doesn't understand how she is, and how much she's failing. I guess you have to see it to believe it, cause she's aging, and I don't think he wants to admit that, although i'm 2.5 yrs younger than he is.

That is very VERY sad. I have nearly died so many times that I stopped counting. At least 5 times, I was in the hospital at the time.
It was the nursing staff that kept me from dying. The interns "on call" claimed "she is making it up" and refused to come up to even look at me.
And after major abdominal surgery, it was a nurse who kept me from committing suicide. When the bowels finally start working they are filled with gas. It hurt so bad, I would break out in a cold sweat. I was screaming for help. A nurse stopped in my room to explain how to get the gas out by alternating lying on each side for 10-15 minutes until the pain and gas passed. I still remember that woman helping me.
I know there are bad ones as well. One nurse stole my pain meds. She claimed to "mix" two meds into one syringe that I know are never mixed. When I was still in pain 15 minutes later, she kept claiming "give it some time to work" (for IV medications - NO). I called patient advocate and she was searched and taken to ER then to jail. She had the syringe of my pain meds in her pocket.
Gee.....wonder if they charged me for that medication.

But really the good nurses outweigh the bad.
I appreciate ALL of your comments, and hey..i don't mind that my post generated a lot of different opinions about nursing, and nursing home care etc.etc....
It's educating all of us, and gives us all a bunch of perspectives, that may help someone else another day, and so on....
So, thank you from the bottom of my heart, for being so welcoming to me, and my Mom....
She's sick with a stomach bug, and not feeling well, but the fall didn't hurt her, or cause any pain at all, so she was lucky this time!
They had her on oxygen, after her fall, but she didn't have to stay on it, so that's a good thing.
Now today, I'm dealing with my own pain..I have spinal stenosis, and Degenerative Disc disease, and i fell about a month ago, pretty hard on pavement, while riding an electric scooter, and the scooter fell on me, and my pain is so severe today, that they got me in for an appointment.
I'm hoping they can find out what is wrong, besides me having chronic back pain. This is such acute pain, that i need some relief..i can't sleep, can't get comfortable, and am in agony.
