I am walking beside my mother in law during her difficult final days.
She has entered end stage Alzheimers - could be months, could be years.
Here is my comment: I don't understand why so many people insist on keeping their loved ones alive as long as possible while suffering awful diseases.
Why prolong the torture? I respect my mother in law but I will not take extreme measures to keep her alive one more month or week or whatever.
I love her too much to drag this out and I have clearly given my children the same message about me.
At some point, these measures change the focus from the patient's comfort..........to the caregiver's guilt trip.
I want to gently lead my mother in law home. Comfort and quality is everything. Adding more days.........not such a good idea.

thier wonderful for her and you and thier the greatest team to have, I had them finally for my mom and it was a great help.I keep telling myself if there saved thier gonna be ok and you to. mom wnet quickly andwas only out of it three weeks before she died but I prayed not to let it drag on like some cause she wouldn't want that and he did. it was peaceful and not painful as before. I prayed.
My mom was not allowed to go quickly.
My sister was the "angelic lone caregiver" struggling all alone day and night to try and keep mom comfortable (and alive), get her to chemo (even when mom wanted no more part of it) so she could continue the "saint with a dash of martyr" routine.
My sister is a real piece of work.
But that's a different story.
That is where I learned about caregivers who force elder parents into all sorts of treatments just to keep up their image.
What reasons are there for just keeping an empty shell alive when the soul is ready to fly away?
