I am so sorry that he is like that.
I don't have bad news of this scope to share with my mother in law, but she does seem to focus on her thoughts than what others say.
I finally had enough when last spring I had a hernia that needed repair, doc said not to lift anything or I would end up in the hospital. Well mom called and I flew cross country the same day...three times. I moved her painting by myself and then packed and cleaned the rest of the house. I paid the price....
Now I've learned to say no. When she broke her arm she insisted on going home and then expected me to fly out to help her. I told her that I had something at home that I couldn't leave, which was true. So she had to accept an aide.
In my moms case this is a life long problem. It is just more obvious now that I get the full force. But I think the age/dementia is also making it worse.
It seems he is not going to help you in your concerns. It will be easier for you to leave him out of the mix if his input is so negative.
Many of us have learned to live our lives away from theirs. It is needed to preserve your strength.

This time it's different. I told him about my eye and he has severed the relationship. And this time I'm going to leave it at that. He obviously could care less about my well being. I don't feel the same--I care. I really do. Not a day has gone by when I haven't worried about him and wondered if he's okay. Still, I can't make someone love or respect me or want me in their lives. Funny, I would have settled for crumbs. Even a lie would have been enough.
