this is a bit off topic but yet not. my dad is a WW2 vet and always has gotten a substantial benefit on their school and property taxes. this year NYS stopped giving the exemption and they had to pay 1800$ more on school taxes. I was fit to be tied, I couldn't understand this and why ny would do this, though in ny anything is possible. I wrote to the governor, actually received an email back saying it will go to the proper agency to look into it. I received a letter from the agency, aperently they had been trying to reach my via email, I don't remember ever seeing anything, but gave me a name and number to call, they want my dads address to further look into this!! I am so excited, first time I have pushed the bandwagon and tried to fight the system, I so hope it will be changed and he will get the money back. keep fingers crossed. I hope I hear back from the man today.

Many many years ago, when Mom was selling my childhood home back on her family's farm? A realtor made her cry.
Well, that won't happen to my mom!

I called the president of the real estate firm (a big one, covered 6 states) and oh, did that change things! Phone calls to me, and I said, "Hey, talk to my mom, she's the one who's upset!" and in a month? Smoothed out like silk. I was so terrified of doing it, then it went so well!

So I hope you get the same good outcome:-)

Good for you guys. Yes, you have made a difference! Ann, even if they don't do anything for your dad you have planted a seed. Somebody is going to have to "get it" that a sudden $1,800 increase in taxes for somebody your dad's age has GOT to sting.

Oh, yes - I am a firm believer in being a squeaky wheel!

Most recently went on the USPS site to complain about mail and packages getting mis-delivered in my Mom's new neighborhood. Surprised to actually get a call the next evening from them explaining that it was a temp carrier and things were straightened out.

Not as big a deal as what you are facing, but it typically does pay to reach out and follow through on these things.

Not much around here though.

We have been trying to organize against fracking with very little success.

Are you thinking of the star program? my mom still gets it and now gets extended star. It sounds like a clerical mistake to me.

mom gets good information from her state representative.
I can try to send you the info I have if you need it.

thank you all and kudos to all who have succeded and are trying to change things. it is very confusing, my sister talked to the town tax accessor and she told susan that to leave it alone, he is on the best plan for him, something about his taxes would be higher if given the vet exemption, susan said to stop and leave it alone. not sure what to do, I don't want to put him in a worse situation, but I also think that having them look into it and maybe it would be better if not then don't take the exemption. the state department is taking it very seriously, we have been playing phone tag, I cant have the phone on at work. advice?
