As long as he is in his right mind but stubborn, there is really nothing we can do for them. I get that sometimes too.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Yes, your dad may be bringing a lot of it on himself ( Lord knows I hit my head against the wall trying to get my dad to care for himself). He may be afraid though, and think that there's no use taking the meds if he's going to end up in the hospital anyway. I know it's unbelievably hard, but try to be patient and understanding. It is hard when our parents do not comply with medical advice. Not much you can do except keep encouraging him to comply. You could threaten to have him declared incompetent to make his own medical decisions, but that is a very hard path to walk.

I'm at my waits end with my Mom, too. When there a danger to themselves, like yours and mine are. It is stressful and hard to cope with. Correction: In the first sentence I was trying to say wit's end. My Mo.m was failing to take her medicine correctly. I told her kinda manly she was o ly gonna wind up 8n the hospital. My cousin is medical power of attorney and a while ba k told me she can get me for elder abuse. My Mom or .y cousi. I'm not sure which. I try to work it out civilly and she won't cooperate. My counsi and zi do 't speak .my h. But this is all another story.. we don't want to get uncivilized with them, but we worry. We try to keep them from out of the hands if a hospital and we beat our heads against the wall. I don't know the suction for you either. In my case,, I know zi can't be mean. It didn't really sound like you were. Just frustrated. I get it.

People have a right to make bad choices and that is hard to watch when we love them.... xo

Oh, boy, is this unpleasant for ourselves. We can love our parents but still get so angry at them. Sometimes our older adult parents have a loss of executive functioning which makes their problem solving and decision making abilities just go down, down, down. They can live alone, take a shower or cook food, but decision making becomes cloudy or bad. There is a book that helped me a lot: Loving Hard-to-Love Parents by Paul Chafetz. Sometimes we can intervene and sometimes we can't. I got hung up in wanting better or different from how my in-laws were making decisions and their end of life process. I had to realize that I had no power to change them or their situation because they gave the legal power to a person who didn't care. It wasn't abuse or neglect but it was neglectful and problematic ethically if one's standard of care is loving care and doing one's best. So what the in-laws got was semi-neglectful, incompetent, uncaring care from their chosen MPOA but the in-laws felt and said this person was wonderful and took great care of them. Go figure. It was hard to sit back and wait it out. Lots of detachment on my part, lots of times I had to say "detach, detach, detach" to myself. I wish you the peace of mind you seek.
