we had to go through all of his papers to find out what accounts were what he liked to move money around from bank to bank and had accounts scattered all of the town. when they get old their minds do not operate efficiently anymore and one has to be watching them to see if that is what is happening to them they just do not remember anymore and it is not their fault once you find out the reason for his decision making it could be he just does not know what he is doing anymore.........see him differently and with compassion and i sense you do with your dad
god bless you
Now refi is not necessarily a bad thing. Many people were able to reduce their interest rates substantially. Of course many people used the opportunity to borrow more money or got into adjustable rates that are now higher than ever.
You might try using this opportunity to insist that dad show you all his finances. As Shur said he might have other accounts that he has forgotten about. Do a property search for unclaimed funds for the state he lives in. Also contact his bank to see what they have to say. Then you can sit down with him to make a budget. At $4,000 a month he should be able to handle the mortgage if he is careful. Should be about $1,600 a month plus taxes. You could also look at doing a reverse mortgage conversion.
Please be very careful. Your dad made his choices and now he has to live with it. Don't let emotional blackmail cripple you financially.
