Caring For Aging Parents Support Group
Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Whether you have just started caring for your parents or just need a place to talk, we're here.
So at my wits end and could use advice (and to vent). Long story short: dad was a rageaholic my entire life. He could go for days and even weeks on end storming around and being nasty to everyone. I had a fairly miserable childhood always being on edge wondering what mood he would be in. I hid in my bedroom most of the time to avoid him. So did my brother.
Mom was a very loving mom. She did her best. But I wish she would have divorced my dad when I was a kid.
Now they are retired and in their early 70's. My dad still rages and my mom is an alcoholic. They are absolutely toxic together and they spread the joy. I know the police have been to their home at least 5 times in the past couple of years. They have BOTH been arrested for domestic violence. My dad loves to call family and blame them for all of his problems. His brother and sister will not even speak to him and haven't for years. He has burned every bridge. They are not invited to family functions anymore.
Now we barely see my parents. I've been in their home once in the past year and they only live 20 minutes away. Anytime things almost get better my parents have some sort of meltdown and alienate everyone again. I have forgiven my dad so many times after he has apologized but I'm done. He doesn't change. I usually invite them to my house before most holidays. I stopped inviting them on actual holidays because they ruin them. Recently I stopped doing even that.
My mom is depressed and lonely. She misses her grandkids. She is pretty much trapped with my dad. Her drinking does not help and infuriates my dad. I don't go to their house anymore because I'm afraid. They have many many guns. He has hinted at murder suicide before. I do not put it past him. I don't put it past her either. Why the police won't remove his guns I have no idea. When she is mad at my dad he is the worst person ever and she is a victim. When she isn't mad at him then he is misunderstood and we are not fair to him. I invite her to lunch and she uses the ocassion to cheerlead for him. Both my brother and I have offered to help her move. She says she can't or doesn't want to. They are extremely co-dependent.
I'm tired of the drama and of them. At their age they should be enjoying their family, especially their grandkids. But they are in misery. I can't imagine living the way they do. If I got a phone call tonight and was told one had killed the other and then killed themselves I would not be surprised. I believe they are going to die unhappy and regretful. I have no idea of what to do about it however. Anyone else in similar circumstances?

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

First of all, no I am not in that situation. My parents have both passed away, and they were decent to me and each other.
Changing their behavior at this stage of their lives can be difficult, perhaps impossible.
How old are your children? If they are old enough to understand the behavior of their grandparents then they may be up for visits. If they are young, visits do not sound like a good idea.
Have you considered the old divide and conquer method? You can tell them that they are toxic together, and you will not put up with their behavior any more. That you have decided to visit with them one at a time on neutral ground. (As I read this, I am at a loss as to how to pull it off.)
Gentle hugs
Unless one of your parents is found not legally able to make their own decisions there's nothing that you can do.... I think putting the boundaries in place that you've had to for you and your family is the best that you can do.... I know it must be painful but I think that it's probably the best choice you can make..... Big hug and a blessing......xo
