Caring For Aging Parents Support Group
Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Whether you have just started caring for your parents or just need a place to talk, we're here.
I'm afraid my former post was not well written..... and to be honest, was written on the fly.
I didn't mean to imply that we should let our parents do whatever they want whenever they want. But there has to be a healthy medium between dietary restrictions and allowing someone to enjoy a simple pleasure like a potato chip.
And having living through the loss of a spouse I can testify that my suicide by diet choice is: Taco Bell.
What's hard is in my heart, I know if it were me who needed her back when, and I did , she wouldn't be there for me, but I've been able to put that away and enjoy the visits. I'd like her to enjoy her health, but I won't stress her to the limit about food, however, I'll feel better if I find less salt alternatives, and if she gets someone else to buy her other things I can't take them away from her, she's not a child. I think in the next visit, I'll ask the doctor to stress the importance of watching out for herself as far as the fluid in her heart is concerned, then I still say it's her call.
You are taking care of your mom, and hopefully your children and other younger family members will notice. The lesson they should learn is that if mom took care of grandma who was not a nice mother, then it is important that I help take care of my mom (and dad, or mother in law, or father in law, or aunt, or uncle, ... ) when their time comes.
At the end of our lives when we are 'balancing up our actions' I think we all will feel better if we spent the time and energy taking care of an abusive parent than if we rationalized leaving them alone due to their terrible parenting skills.
Soooo, again welcome to the group. Yes, you are now the independent one and your mother is the dependent one. It is hard to get used to, but you can do it. We here are all in different stages of getting used to it.
I was letting her eat what she wanted as she simply refused to eat otherwise.
Before she went into the nursing home, I cooked super gourmet food just to get her to eat. I was killing myself buying food and cooking all the time, and working full time. Now I am on sick leave and can't drive my car for the moment, I realized that visiting her once a week and bringing her treats once a week is enough.
I know your mom asks others to get her Pringles, but soon they may realize she shouldn't be eating them and may refuse to buy them.
I think following your heart is the answer. She's lived a long life, my mom is 91, and quality vs quantity applies.
I think I would go for the Pringles too.
I am an only child and must deal with all her problems on my own, I sure appreciate coming here sometimes.
Big Hugs:)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
